Modelling
A computer model is a representation of a real-world system or process.
Computerized models are used to predict how a real-life system might
behave. A model is created through mathematical analysis of the real-world
process and can be run on a simulation.
What-if analysis
This is the process of asking the question what would happen if…? IT is used
to workout answers to questions we may have about our model
Characteristics of modelling software
A computer network simulation produces a diagram of the devices
connected on the computer network. It can identify the IP addresses
used on the network and allows wireless network to be added and
configures to see what the effects will be.
Computer Aided Design(CAD) software is a type of simulation software
that enables designers to produce a model of a physical object. It can
also change, adjust, add & remove objects in the model, view the
objects from different angles, focus on specific features, apply different
effects etc.
Modelling software often includes:
The ability to change variables and data within the software to
model different scenarios
Asking what-if questions
Formulas and functions to carry out calculations in the model
Automatic recalculation of formulas
Rules that define how the model behaves
The ability to view and analyze different parts of the model
separately

The need for computer models
Training: they can be used to train people to use equipment, get used
to certain conditions, etc.
Financial forecasting: used to predict what might happen to profits or
the economy. It makes certain business decisions less risky as what
would happen to the finances would be predicted.
Population growth
Weather forecasting
Climate change(forecasting)
Construction modelling: ex. bridges, buildings etc.
Traffic flow
Queue management: computer models can be used to help manage
queues, it is useful for a business to predict the number of customers
and calculate how long it takes to serve each customer. It can help the
business determine no. of staff needed etc.
