Tutorial 7

The document outlines a tutorial for MAM1020F, covering various mathematical concepts including derivatives, continuity, differentiability, motion equations, and properties of functions. It includes specific problems related to finding derivatives, tangent lines, and analyzing functions for continuity and differentiability at certain points. Additionally, it presents true/false statements regarding function properties that require justification or counterexamples.

MAM1020F Tutorial 7 2–3 April 2024

1. (a) Use the definition of√the derivative of a function at a point to find

f 0 (4) where f (x) = 2x + 1
(b) Find the equation of the tangent line to f at x = 4.

x2 + 2x + 1 if x ≥ 0
2. We define f (x) = where a and b are arbitrary
ax + b if x < 0
constants.

(a) How should you choose a and b so that h is continuous at x = 0?

(b) How should you choose a and b so that h is differentiable at x = 0?

3. Let a function f : R → R be defined by

x+1 x≤1
f (x) =
a(x − 2)2 + b x>1

where a and b are constants chosen so that f is differentiable at x = 1.

Find the value of f (2).

4. The equation of motion of a particle is s = t3 − 3t, where s is in meters

and t ≥ 0 is in seconds. Find

(a) the velocity and acceleration as functions of t,

(b) the acceleration after 2s, and
(c) the acceleration when the velocity is 0.

5. Show that if f is an even function then f 0 is an odd function. [Try a

proof using the limit definition of f 0 (x) and f 0 (−x). Your proof must
work for any even function; it is not good enough to check it for one
even function.]

6. Which of the following statements are true, and which are false? If you
believe that a statement is true, then give a reason. If you believe that
a statement is false, then give an example to show that it is not true.

1
(a) If f and g are both increasing functions on an interval, then f g is
an increasing function on that interval.
(b) If
lim f (x) = 0
x→a

and g(a) is defined, then

lim f (x)g(x) = 0
x→a

(c) If f is an odd function then f 0 is an even function.

(d) If f is differentiable at a then f 00 (a) exists.
(e) If f is differentiable at a then lim f (x) exists.
x→a

(f) If f is differentiable for all positive x and f 0 (x) → 0 as x → ∞

then f has a horizontal asymptote.
(g) Suppose f is defined on an interval [a, b], and that f (a) > 0 and
f (b) < 0. Then for some c ∈ [a, b], f (c) = 0.
(h) If limx→a f (x) exists and limx→a g(x) does not exist, then limx→a [f (x)g(x)]
does not exist.
(i) If limx→a f (x) does not exist and limx→a g(x) does not exist, then
limx→a [f (x)g(x)] does not exist.
(j) If limx→a f (x) does not exist, then limx→a |f (x)| does not exist.
(k) If f and g are real valued functions and limx→2 [f (x)g(x)] = L
then L = f (2)g(2).
(l) If f 0 (a) is undefined, then f (x) has a vertical tangent at x = a
