CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF THE BIOLOGICAL
BASIS OF MEDITATION

How meditation might work:
• Affecting the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system.
• Reducing activity in the sympathetic system and increasing activity in
the parasympathetic system.
• Breathing air into the lungs temporarily blocks parasympathetic
influence on heart rate.
• Breathing air out of the lungs reinstates parasympathetic influence on
heart rate so heart rate goes down.

Mindfulness
• 1) The quality or state of being mindful
• 2) The practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of
heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions,
or experience on a moment-to-moment basis.

Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness
• According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, "mindfulness means paying attention
• in a particular way;
• on purpose,
• in the present moment,
• and non-judgmentally."

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
• MBSR- developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1990
• A program of daily meditations and gentle stretching exercises
designed to refocus the body’s response to stressors outside of
one’s control.
• The goal of MBSR is to empower individuals to respond
consciously, rather than automatically, to circumstances.

• Systematic review of 17 articles
• 16 demonstrated positive changes in psychological or
physiological outcomes related to anxiety and/or stress
• Limitations- not all studies were RCT, small sample sizes,

• Conclusions- MBSR appears to be a promising modality for
stress management.

• Reducing stress in health care workers can increase

• MBSR can be used to develop self-compassion which in turn
holds promise for reducing perceived stress and increasing
effectiveness of clinical care.

Discussion
• Relaxation therapy is effective as an adjunct to medical care as well as
standard cardiac rehabilitation.
• Confirming previous studies that already established the important
role of stress management and psycho-education for cardiac patients.
• Specifically, relaxation is beneficial for the emotional and physical
state of the patient.
• Relaxation adds another dimension to rehabilitation and recovery.
• Intensive programs have better results.
• Limitations-sample size, only 10 randomized studies
