UNIT 3:
COMPARISON
I. Comparison lesson:

1. Basic Comparison Structures

A. Comparative Adjectives

To compare two things, we use comparative adjectives. For most one-syllable

adjectives, we add "-er" to the end of the adjective.

Examples:

 Big → Bigger: "This house is bigger than that one."

 Small → Smaller: "The cat is smaller than the dog."

For adjectives with two or more syllables, we use "more" before the adjective.

Examples:

 Beautiful → More beautiful: "This painting is more beautiful than the other one."
 Expensive → More expensive: "A car is more expensive than a bicycle."

B. Superlative Adjectives

When comparing more than two things, we use the superlative form. For most one-
syllable adjectives, we add "-est" to the end.

Examples:

 Big → Biggest: "This is the biggest building in the city."

 Small → Smallest: "She has the smallest hands in her family."

For adjectives with two or more syllables, we use "the most" before the adjective.

Examples:

 Beautiful → The most beautiful: "She is the most beautiful person I've ever seen."
 Expensive → The most expensive: "That is the most expensive item in the shop."

C. Irregular Adjectives (tính từ bất quy tắc)

Some adjectives have irregular comparative and superlative forms.

33
Examples:

 Good → Better → Best: "He is a good player, but she is better, and their coach is
the best."
 Bad → Worse → Worst: "His handwriting is bad, her handwriting is worse, but
mine is the worst."

2. Comparative and Superlative Adverbs

Adverbs can also be used to make comparisons.

A. Comparative Adverbs

 "Quickly" → "More quickly": "She finished the race more quickly than he did."
 "Slowly" → "More slowly": "He speaks more slowly than his brother."

B. Superlative Adverbs

 "Quickly" → "The most quickly": "She finished the race the most quickly."
 "Slowly" → "The most slowly": "He speaks the most slowly in the class."

3. Using "as...as" for Equal Comparisons:

To show that two things are equal in some way, use the structure "as + adjective/adverb
+ as."

Examples:

 "She is as tall as her brother."

 "He runs as fast as a cheetah."

4. Common Mistakes to Avoid (các lỗi sai chung cần phải tránh):
 Do not use double comparatives or superlatives (e.g., "more bigger," "the most
tallest").
 Be careful with irregular forms, as they don't follow the usual patterns.

34
5. Some irregular adjectives in comparison:
Adjective (Tính Comparative Superlative Câu ví dụ
từ) (So sánh hơn) (So sánh nhất)
good better best Mary is the best singer in my
