A COMPUTER SOFTWARE
Computer software is a series
of guidelines that instruct the
computer what to do and how to
do it. It consists of programs,
procedures and documentations
that run in a computer system.
Computer software has two
types-the System Software and
Application Software.
System Software
The collection of programs
intended to operate, control
and extend the processing
capacities of the computer itself.
It is generally prepared by
computer manufacturers. These
software products include
programs written in low-level
languages which communicate
with the hardware components at
an exceptionally fundamental
level.
System Software
OPERATING SYSTEM
1
Oversees the overall activity of
the computer--including
monitoring the computers’ input
and output processes. It controls
the utilization of hardware,
software, and information
resources of a computer system.
Types of
Operating System
Android
Android - is a popular
operating system for
mobiles primarily for
touchscreen devices,
cellphones, and
tablets. It was
developed by Google.
Windows
Windows Operating
System - is the leading and
most popular operating
system. It offers a graphical
user interface (GUI), virtual
memory management,
multitasking and support for
many peripheral
components. Developed by
Microsoft.
IOS
IOS - is the mobile operating
system developed by Apple
that runs the iPhone, iPad, and
iPod touch devices. It utilizes a
multi-touch interface in which
simple gestures are used to
operate the device.
Linux
Linux Operating System – is
an operating system based on
UNIX that can be installed in a
computer and laptops. The
Linux kernel was developed
mainly by Linus Torvalds and it
is based on Unix.
Mac OS
Mac OS - is the official
name of the Apple
Macintosh operating
system. It has a graphical
user interface (GUI) that
utilizes windows, icons,
etc. designed only by
Apple computers and
laptops. I was developed
by Apple
System Software
DEVICE DRIVERS
(INSTALLERS)
2
A device driver is a computer
program that controls a particular
hardware device. It provides the
user with an interface for the
device and enables the operating
system and other software to
communicate with the hardware
and initiate its functions.
System Software
UTILITY SOFTWARE 3
Utility Software are programs
that help in managing the
computer hardware and
application software. Users
often install additional utilities
for higher security and to
perform tasks beyond the
capabilities of the operating
system.
Types of
Utility Software
System Utilities
System Utilities is a
software application that
helps optimized and
maintain a computer just
like an anti-virus, memory
testers, package managers,
network utilities, and
registry cleaner.
File Management Utilities
This is a computer
program that provides a
user with a graphical
interface in which a user
can organize files and
folders on a computer
storage device.
System Security
System security are
programs that monitor
the use of a computer
system to protect it and
its resources from
unauthorized use, fraud
or destruction.
FIRMWARE 4
Firmware is a specific type of
software embedded directly
into a hardware device. It
provides the low-level
instructions and basic
machine code required for the
device to power on, function
properly, and communicate
with other systems
BOOTLOADER 5
Bootloader is a small
program that loads the
operating system (OS) or
firmware into memory when
a device starts up. It is
essential for initializing
hardware components and
handling control over the
OS.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
This are software
designed to perform a
specific function for the
benefits of the user. It
may be related to
productivity, creativity,
and communication.
Application Software
Productivity Software 1
Productivity software
encompasses digital tools
designed to help
individuals and teams
create documents,
manage tasks, organize
data, and streamline
workflows.
Database Software 2
Database software is the core
application used to store, organize,
retrieve, and manipulate structured or
unstructured data. It is the secure,
high-performance backbone that
manages everything from web
applications and financial networks to
client relationships.
Multimedia Software 3
Multimedia software refers to
computer programs designed to
create, edit, play, or manage
content that combines multiple
media types, such as text, audio,
images, animation, and video.
These applications serve as the
bridge between creative ideas and
digital output for entertainment,
business, and education
Web Browsers 4
Web Browser is a software
application that retrieves,
translates, and displays
resources from the World Wide
Web. It acts as your primary
windows to the internet, allowing
you to access websites, watch
videos, download files, and
interact with web-based
applications across your devices.
B PEOPLEWARE
Peopleware refers to the
human/ people aspects of
computer technology
development and use. It
includes the development of
productive individuals and
teams.
C PROCEDURE
Procedure is a specific,
established sequence of steps
or instructions designed to
accomplish a task or achieve a
desired outcome. It ensures
that actions are completed
accurately, consistently, and
safely every time they are
performed.
D DATAWARE
Dataware is a centralized
database that aggregates
information from various
sources, allowing users
to access and analyze
data effectively.
QUIZ
Reflection Question:
“Why is it important to understand
software, peopleware, procedure, and
dataware when setting up or using a
computer system?”
