🎓 BUSM4567 – WEEK 2 FULL SCRIPT

Topic: Environmental Sustainability

⏱ 0–5 MINUTES — OPENING

Slide 1 – Title

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

“Good morning everyone.

Today we move from talking about tourism…

to questioning whether tourism deserves to exist.”

Pause.

“Tourism sells paradise.

But it consumes paradise at the same time.”

Let that sit.

⏱ 5–10 MINUTES — THE 7Ps EXPECTATIONS

Slide 2 – The 7Ps

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Don’t read it.

Say:

“If we are discussing sustainability,

then we must practice responsibility.”

Highlight:

 No plagiarism

 Participation

 Patience

“Sustainability is about long-term thinking.

That includes academic integrity.”
⏱ 10–20 MINUTES — DEFINING SUSTAINABILITY

Slide 4 – Brundtland Declaration

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Read it slowly:

“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising

the ability of future generations…”

Then ask:

“What does ‘needs’ mean?”

Push them:

Basic survival?
Luxury travel?
Economic growth?

Then ask:

“Who decides what future generations need?”

This introduces intergenerational ethics.

Say:

“This definition sounds simple.

But it is politically explosive.”

⏱ 20–30 MINUTES — THE LANDSCAPE OF TOURISM

Slide 5 – The landscape of tourism

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Point to the quote.

“Tourism depends on two landscapes:

Nature.
And the city.”

Then ask:

“Which one is more fragile?”

Discuss:

 Natural landscape → ecological limits

 Urban landscape → infrastructure limits

Say:

“The environment is not just a background.

It is the product.”

⏱ 30–40 MINUTES — TOURISM IS ENVIRONMENTALLY DEPENDENT

Slide 6

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

“Tourism is environmentally dependent.”

Ask:

“If Ha Long Bay becomes polluted,

does tourism survive?”

“If coral dies,

does diving tourism survive?”

Then:

“In the absence of attractive environment,

there would be little tourism.”

This is not emotional.

This is structural dependency.

⏱ 40–50 MINUTES — ENVIRONMENT AS EXPERIENCE

Slide 7

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Environment as:

 Setting for action

 Social system
 Emotional territory

 Self

Say:

“When tourists visit Sapa,

they are not just seeing mountains.

They are constructing identity.”

Ask:

“Why do people post eco-travel on Instagram?”

Because environment becomes self-expression.

Tourism consumes identity.

⏱ 50–65 MINUTES — WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE TOURISM?

Slide 8 – UNWTO Definition

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Break it down:

Economic needs
Social needs
Ecological processes
Biodiversity
Cultural integrity

Ask:

“Is it realistic to satisfy all at once?”

Push tension.

⏱ 65–75 MINUTES — THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE

Slide 9

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Draw triangle on board:

People – Planet – Profit

Say:

“These are not equal.

They conflict.”

Ask:

“If visitor numbers double,

what happens?”

Profit ↑
Pressure ↑
Waste ↑

Then:

“Sustainability is not balance.

It is trade-offs.”

⏱ 75–85 MINUTES — ELEMENTS OF SUSTAINABILITY

Slides 11–12

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Discuss environmental dimension:

 Biodiversity

 Materials

 Energy

 Biophysical interactions

Ask:

“Does a luxury eco-resort importing Italian marble count as sustainable?”

Push:

Material sourcing matters.

Energy matters.

Water matters.
Not just marketing.

⏱ 85–95 MINUTES — POSITIVE IMPACTS

Slide 13

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Say:

“Tourism can improve environmental standards.”

Examples:

 LEED hotels

 Renewable energy adoption

 Waste management

Ask:

“Would some destinations invest in infrastructure without tourism?”

Sometimes tourism drives regulation.

⏱ 95–105 MINUTES — NEGATIVE IMPACTS

Slide 14

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Go slow.

Water depletion.
Waste pressure.
Habitat destruction.
Commercialization.

Ask:

“Is over-tourism an accident?

Or a business model?”

Let them feel uncomfortable.

⏱ 105–115 MINUTES — GLOBAL CONTEXT

Slide 15

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Climate change.
Water scarcity.
Biodiversity loss.

Ask:

“Can developing countries afford to reject tourism?”

This is the dilemma.

Growth vs conservation.

⏱ 115–125 MINUTES — DEPLETION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

Slide 16

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Show images.

Luxury resort.
Mountains.
Polluted beach.

Ask:

“Which one generates more GDP?”

Usually the resort.

“Which one generates more ecological risk?”

Also the resort.

Push:

Short-term revenue vs long-term cost.

⏱ 125–135 MINUTES — CONSERVATION OR EXPLOITATION?

Slide 17
2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

Ask:

“Is Ba Na Hills conservation or exploitation?”

Let debate happen.

Then ask:

“If eco-tourism becomes popular,

does it remain eco?”

This is the paradox.

⏱ 135–145 MINUTES — WHERE ARE WE?

Slide 18

2023_BL_Week 2-1-2-1

“The environmental perspective focuses on what tourists do.”

Ask:

“What activities cause most damage?”

 Jet skiing

 Coral touching

 Plastic consumption

 Cruise tourism

Then:

“Sustainability is behavioral management.”

⏱ FINAL 10 MINUTES — STRONG CLOSE

Ask:

“If tourism disappeared tomorrow,

would the environment recover?”

Some say yes.

Some say no.
Then:

“If tourism continues without limits,

what happens?”

Silence.

Then close:

“Eco-tourism is not about nature.

It is about responsibility.

The real question is not:

Can tourism grow?

The real question is:

Should it?”

Pause.

“Next week, we will discuss how to manage this tension.”
