EE7213 Power Electronic Applications
Academic Year (2025/2026)
Design Project
Project Overview:
In this project, students are required to design, model, and simulate a grid-connected
photovoltaic (PV) power system comprises the following key components:
• A PV array
• A DC-DC converter with an integrated Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm
• A three-phase DC-AC inverter
• Loal load and utility connection
Students may undertake this project as a group assignment. Each group can consist of up to three
members. Table 1 outlines the design specifications for five different systems. Each group will be
assigned one system from the table to work on.

Project Tasks:
1. Design the system components, including:
• The DC-DC converter with an integrated MPPT algorithm
• The DC-AC inverter, capable of delivering a pure sine wave
2. Model and simulate the complete system
3. Analyze system performance under dynamic operating conditions
System Design Requirements:
• Implement MPPT to ensure effective power tracking under variable irradiance.
• Design appropriate filters and control strategies for the inverter.
• Ensure the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of inverter current is below 10% under rated
conditions.
• Maintain stable inverter output under varying load conditions.
Dynamic Test Scenarios:
The system should be evaluated under the following operating conditions:
1. Irradiance variations:
o Step increase: 500 W/m² → 1000 W/m² (keep the load constant at 50% of the
rated load)
o Step decrease: 1000 W/m² → 700 W/m² (keep the load constant at 50% of the
rated load)
2. Load variations:
o Step increase: 50% → 100% of rated load (keep the irradiance constant at 800
W/m2)
o Step decrease: 100% → 60% of rated load (keep the irradiance constant at 800
W/m2)
Key Parameters to be Analyzed:
• MPPT voltage response
• Intermediate DC link voltages if exists
• Inverter output voltage and current waveforms
• THD of inverter voltage and current
• Power production from the PV array
• Load power consumption
• Power exchanged with the grid
Deliverables:
1. Technical Report, including:
• Detailed design calculations for all components
• Description of the MPPT algorithm used
• Plots and analysis of each test case
• Annotated simulation models (appendix)
2. Simulation Files: Submit all simulation models (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink files)
