SECTION 1 — WHAT IS AN ERROR NOTEBOOK?
An Error Notebook is a dedicated book where you record every question you got
wrong — but not just the question. You record why you got it wrong and exactly what the correct
thinking is.
IT IS NOT:
✗ A place to copy out all your notes again
✗ Just writing the correct answer and moving on
✗ A punishment for getting things wrong
✗ Optional — it IS your revision bank
IT IS:
✓ A personalised exam paper made entirely of your weak points
✓ A record of your thinking errors, not just your knowledge gaps
✓ The thing you review instead of textbooks before exams
✓ Your most valuable study resource by the end of the year
"Before my Gaokao, I stopped reviewing textbooks entirely. I only reviewed my error
notebook for the last three weeks. I scored 148/150 in Maths."
— Reported study method of a Gaokao (top scorer)
SECTION 2 — THE 5-FIELD ENTRY SYSTEM
Every entry in your error notebook should have exactly five fields. This structure is what separates a
useful error notebook from a useless one.
FIELD 1 — THE QUESTION
Write the full question (or paste/tape it in). Include the source: which paper, which chapter, which
date you encountered it.
FIELD 2 — YOUR WRONG ANSWER
Write exactly what you put. Don't skip this -- seeing your wrong answer is important. It reminds
your brain what the trap looked like.
FIELD 3 — ERROR TYPE
Categorise your mistake (see Section 3). Was it a knowledge gap, a careless error, a misread, a
technique gap? Be honest.

FIELD 4 — CORRECT METHOD
Write the full correct solution in your own words. Not copied from the mark scheme — rewritten by
you. If you can't do this, you don't understand it yet.
FIELD 5 — TRAP REMINDER
One sentence: what should you watch out for next time? This is the most important field. It's what
you skim before the exam.
SECTION 3 — CATEGORISE YOUR MISTAKES
Gaokao toppers know that not all mistakes are equal. Categorising them helps you fix the right problem.
TYPE A — KNOWLEDGE GAP
What it means: You simply didn't know the concept, formula, or rule.
How to fix it: Fix: Go back to source material. Re-learn the concept properly. Add a summary to
Field 4.
TYPE B — TECHNIQUE GAP
What it means: You know the concept but couldn't apply it to this question type.
How to fix it: Fix: Find 3 more similar questions and do them. Practice the method until it's
automatic.
TYPE C — CARELESS ERROR
What it means: You knew the answer but made a slip: misread the question, arithmetic error,
skipped a step.
How to fix it: Fix: Identify your specific careless pattern (e.g., always misread 'minimum' as
'maximum'). Add it as a pre-exam checklist item.
TYPE D — TIME PRESSURE ERROR
What it means: You knew how to do it but ran out of time or panicked.
How to fix it: Fix: This is an exam technique issue. Practice timed conditions more. Work on pacing
strategy.

SECTION 4 — YOUR REVIEW SYSTEM
Writing entries is only half the system. The review schedule is what makes it powerful. Gaokao toppers
review their error notebook at three levels:
DAILY REVIEW 5–10 mins
→ Before starting a new study session, skim the last 3–5 entries from that subject
→ Re-attempt Field 4 (correct method) from memory — cover it and rewrite it
→ If you can't do it from memory, it's not learned yet
WEEKLY REVIEW 20–30 mins (Sunday)
→ Go through the full week's entries
→ Mark any entry you still can't reproduce with a ★ — these are your priority
→ Check: are your errors clustering around one topic? That's your weak area for next week
PRE-EXAM REVIEW Final 1–2 weeks
→ Stop adding new entries — only review existing ones
→ Focus on ★ starred entries and Type A (knowledge gap) errors
→ Skim Trap Reminders (Field 5) the morning of the exam — not full re-study, just activation
SECTION 5 — BLANK ENTRY TEMPLATE
Use the format below in a physical notebook or a digital document. Photocopy this page or recreate it —
one entry per question.

FIELD 2 — MY WRONG ANSWER
What did I actually write or think?

FIELD 3 — CORRECT METHOD (in my own words)
Full working — rewrite without looking at the mark scheme
FIELD 4 — TRAP REMINDER
One sentence: what do I watch out for next time?
★ STILL STRUGGLING WITH THIS? ■Yes — mark it for priority review
SECTION 6 — MISTAKES STUDENTS MAKE WITH ERROR
NOTEBOOKS
1. Just copying the correct answer
This is not an error notebook — it's a copy. The power is in analyzing WHY you were wrong.
Always complete Field 3 (error type) and Field 4 (trap reminder).
2. Never reviewing it
Writing entries without reviewing them gives zero benefit. The review schedule in Section 4 is not
optional. Block 10 minutes before every study session.
3. Only putting in easy mistakes
Students often skip questions that felt 'too hard to understand.' Those are the most important
entries. Hard questions that confused you = highest value errors.
4. Making it too perfect
Some students spend so long on beautiful formatting that they never actually use the notebook.
Messy and functional beats beautiful and unused. Speed matters.
5. Starting too late
The error notebook compounds over months. Starting it in the final month gives you almost nothing.
Start from your first mock exam — even your first chapter test.

START TODAY
The best time to start your error notebook was the first day of school. The second best time is today.
YOUR 3-STEP ACTION PLAN
Any notebook works. Label it 'Error Notebook + subject name'.
STEP 1 — Get a notebook You need one per subject, or divide a larger notebook into
sections.
STEP 2 — Do your next Attempt questions under timed conditions. Every wrong answer =
practice question set a new entry. Use the 5-field system from Section 2.
STEP 3 — Block 10
Set a reminder. Open the notebook. Re-attempt Field 4 from
minutes before
memory for your last 3 entries. That's your daily review done.
