Systematic Auditing in Film

This short film depicts the daily routine of a methodical tax auditor through minimalist graphics and infographics representing his highly organized thought processes. Scenes show his repetitive workday accompanied by precise graphics quantifying details like the number of steps he takes. The style is reminiscent of a Frank Lloyd Wright blueprint or redesigned tax form, with a limited grayscale palette. Movement is quick yet unhurried, mirroring the protagonist's efficient yet redundant work. Sound mirrors the rhythm of his daily grind through instrumental beats syncing with his actions. The film captures his solitary yet systematic lifestyle through graphic interpretations of his analytical mind.

Overview: Information What is it? Who made it?

A movie about a tax auditors obsessively systematic schedule that becomes increasingly affected by a narrators voice in his head.

MK12 (production studio), Ben Radatz (creative director), The Ebeling Group (producer)

When? Why do I love it?

2006

Its incredibly appropriate, sleek, affective, without being overwhelming. I enjoy the stylized tax forms, infographics and typography to accompany the auditors thoughts and daily routine. Theres not a lot of fat in the idea, yet its still highly graphic. The concept is a great visual extension of what I imagine is inside of the protagonists psyche.

Style, Palette, Imagery, Analogy

Decode the style of your piece

It looks like a Frank Lloyd Wright blueprint being visualized with a limited palette or a W-2 revamped by a designer with a knack for minimalism and grids. The cinematography is of the daily, quantified routine of a tax auditor in the city. Gray on gray, day to day. All of the graphics used alongside the video are representative of the systematic auditors daily schedule. i.e., how many steps he takes across the street, the exact number of vertical strokes made when brushing his teeth each morning. Every thought process is accompanied by a sleek, calculated infographic. The palette is simplified to white, with the occasional use of a gray gradient when a typeface is rotating on a hinge.

What does it move like?

Animation, Camera, Edit, Analogy

It moves like a multi-taskers thoughts. At times, multiple frames with different camera angles are shown in order represent the protagonists highly organized and methodical mind. Every movement is quick without being hasty.

What does it sound like?

Music, Sound Design, Mood, Tone

It sounds like the rhythm of a daily grind. Teeth are brushed at a consistent hi-hat beat, a windsor is tied in sync as the tambourine is cued and a circular piano part begins to play, while minimal/mathematical bleeps and bloops accompany the infographics charting his calculated thought processes. The bass guitar joins and parallels the rhythm of his steps taken across the street to work, while a snare answers a correct response to a co-workers question.

Imagery

The footage is of an ordinary, dull business routine, while the graphics represent Harolds highly analytical mind. You see his personal thoughts and ideas placed in boxes and brackets like that of a W-2 form that he uses at work.

Edit

The pace and style of the edit is efficient and organized, with a mechanical pulse of repetition, which reinforces the theme of a daily grind.

Animation

The graphics are animated like that of a sleek digital flip clock on hinges or minimalized architectural blueprints being drawn out. Many of Harolds thought processes are placed in digital calendars or infographics that are quickly built and put in motion - line by line, box by box.
