Introduction
Hand hygiene is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of
infectious diseases. While proper handwashing with soap and water is highly
recommended, it is not always possible in all situations. Because of this, hand sanitizers
are widely used as an alternative for maintaining hand cleanliness, especially when
access to water and soap is limited.
Most commercially available hand sanitizers contain high levels of alcohol and
synthetic chemicals that may cause skin dryness or irritation when used frequently. This
has led to growing interest in the development of hand sanitizers made from natural and
plant-based ingredients. Aloe vera is known for its moisturizing and soothing properties,
lemon contains natural antibacterial compounds, and guava leaves have been found to
have antimicrobial potential. The combination of these ingredients may result in a hand
sanitizer that is both effective and gentle on the skin.
Rationale
This research project aims to develop hand sanitizer using aloe vera, lemon juice,
and guava leaves extracted as natural ingredients. The study seeks to explore the
potential of these components as an alternative to commercially available hand
sanitizers that rely heavily on synthetic substances.
The findings of this research may benefit individuals by providing a safer and
more natural option for hand hygiene. Schools, communities, and health-related
2
institutions may also benefit from the results by using the study as a reference for
promoting affordable and locally sourced hygiene products. Furthermore, this research
may contribute to existing knowledge on herbal-based hand sanitizers and serve as a
foundation for future related studies.
Overall, this study is significant because it supports the development of effective
and skin-friendly hand hygiene products using natural resources.
Problem Statement
Proper hand hygiene is essential in preventing the spread of harmful
microorganisms. However, many commercially available hand sanitizers rely on high
alcohol content and synthetic ingredients, which may cause skin dryness, irritation, or
discomfort when used frequently. This creates a need for alternative hand hygiene
products that are both effective and safe for regular use.
This study seeks to address the following research problems:
Can a hand sanitizer formulated using 70% Ethyl Alcohol, aloe vera, lemon juice,
and guava leaves extract serve as an effective and skin-friendly alternative to
commercially available hand sanitizers?
Specifically, this research aims to answer the following questions:
What are the observable properties (such as texture, scent, and appearance) of the
hand sanitizer made from 70% Ethyl Alcohol, aloe vera, lemon juice, and guava leaves
extract?
3
1. How acceptable is the formulated hand sanitizer in terms of usability and skin feel?
2. What potential benefits can be observed from using natural ingredients in hand
sanitizer formulation?
By addressing these questions, the study intends to determine the feasibility of
producing a natural-based hand sanitizer that supports proper hand hygiene without
causing adverse effects on the skin.
III. Participants
The participants of this study are high school students who have sensitive skin
and can only use hand sanitizers formulated with natural resources, specifically aloe
vera, lemon, and guava leaves extract. These participants were selected because they
are more likely to experience skin irritation from commercially available hand sanitizers
that contain strong chemical components. By involving students with sensitive skin, the
study aims to evaluate the safety, acceptability, and effectiveness of the formulated
natural hand sanitizer in preventing skin irritation while maintaining proper hand
hygiene.
IV. Action Plan / Procedure
This study will be conducted through a systematic process to develop and
evaluate a hand sanitizer formulated with 70% Ethyl Alcohol, Aloe Vera, Lemon extract,
and Guava leaves extract. The procedure will be carried out in the following steps:
4
First, all necessary materials will be prepared. These include 70% Ethyl Alcohol,
fresh aloe vera leaves, fresh lemons, guava leaves, clean containers, measuring tools,
stirring rods, strainers, and other basic household equipment. All tools and containers
will be cleaned and sanitized before use to ensure safety and prevent contamination.
Second, the plant-based ingredients will be extracted. The aloe vera gel will be
obtained by thoroughly washing the aloe leaves, peeling off the outer skin, and
collecting the clear inner gel. The lemon extract will be prepared by washing and
squeezing fresh lemons, then filtering the juice to remove seeds and pulp. The guava
leaves extract will be prepared by washing the leaves thoroughly, boiling them in water
for several minutes, allowing the solution to cool, and filtering it to remove solid
particles.
Third, the extracted ingredients will be measured and combined with 70% Ethyl
Alcohol in appropriate proportions to create the hand sanitizer solution. The mixture will
be stirred thoroughly to ensure uniform blending and proper consistency. Once fully
mixed, the finished product will be transferred into clean, sterilized, and properly labeled
containers for storage and evaluation.
V. Data Gathering Method
The data for this study were gathered through direct observation. After
successfully formulating the hand sanitizer using 70% ethyl alcohol, aloe vera, lemon
extract, and guava leaves extract, the research proceeded with the testing phase of the
study.
5
The researcher applied the formulated hand sanitizer to the selected senior high
school students with sensitive skin during the designated testing period. Before
application, the researcher ensured that their hands were clean to avoid any external
factors that could affect the results of the observation.
During and after the application of the product, the researcher carefully observed
the participants for any visible signs of skin irritation. These included redness, itching,
swelling, rashes, excessive dryness, or any indication of discomfort. The researcher
monitored the condition of their skin immediately after use and throughout the testing
period to determine whether any delayed reactions would occur.
To ensure systematic recording, the researcher used an observation checklist to
document all visible physical responses. The researcher made sure that each
observation was recorded accurately and consistently. All gathered data were compiled
at the end of the testing period for further analysis.
VI. Data Analysis
After completing the observation period, the researcher reviewed and organized
all the recorded data. Since this study relied solely on direct observation, the researcher
analyzed the data using descriptive analysis.
The researcher examined the observation records to determine whether any
participant showed visible signs of skin irritation. The presence or absence of redness,
itching, swelling, dryness, or discomfort served as the basis for my analysis.
6
Because the study focused on observable physical reactions rather than numerical
survey responses, the researcher did not use complex statistical tools. Instead, the
researcher summarized the results clearly and described the overall outcomes based
on what I directly observed during the testing period.
VII. Findings and Results
Based on direct observation throughout the testing period, none of the
participants showed visible signs of skin irritation after using the formulated hand
sanitizer. The researcher did not observe any redness, itching, swelling, rashes, or
excessive dryness on the hands of the participants.
During and after application, the participants appeared comfortable and did not
demonstrate any signs of discomfort. The skin remained in normal condition, indicating
that the formulation did not cause adverse reactions under the conditions of this study.
These findings suggest that the hand sanitizer that was formulated using 70% ethyl
alcohol, aloe vera, lemon extract, and guava leaves extract is safe for external use
among senior high school students with sensitive skin. The absence of irritation
supports the effectiveness of combining natural plant-based ingredients with alcohol to
create a hand hygiene product that is both safe and gentle on the skin.
Overall, the results indicate that the developed product may serve as a suitable and
skin-friendly alternative to commercially available hand sanitizers.
