John Lewis & Partners’s reputation for quality and value is known and trusted by our customers. Our
quality standards require the goods we sell to be fit for purpose and safe; it is the suppliers’
responsibility to make sure all componentry is suitable for end use. We recognise and act on social and
economic pressures as environmental impacts become more severe. Our ambitious efforts to implement
policies and incentives that will support the process are intended to address all aspects of the product. It
is therefore mandatory to use the more sustainable option of trim where the cost neutral and there is
no impact on the critical path. Where there is no option to use a sustainable trim, please contact your
Product Technologist to discuss options.

Below is a list of our nominated suppliers and general guidelines for most common trims these cover. All

 100% Polyester premium Corespun thread (i.e. Coats Epic Supermax/A&E Perma Core Ultimate/Amann Saba C)
100% Polyester premium Corespun thread is specifically designed to help minimize seam puckering and wrinkle free
seaming applications. Tailored clothing including shirts, suits, neckwear, evening dresses, overcoats and sheer fabrics.
This thread has a very smooth clean surface contributing to superior stitch and seam appearance. Can be sewn with
lower tensions and finer needles.

 100% Polyester Corespun thread (i.e. Coats Epic/A&E Perma Core/ Amann Saba C)
It is stronger than spun construction which means you can use a smaller size thread without the loss of strength and
smaller needle size to reduce seam puckering on today’s fabrics. Sews well on automated – multidirectional machines.

 Polyester Filament With A Cotton Wrapper (Coats Dual Duty/A&E D/Core/Amann Rasant)
Polyester corespun with a cotton wrapper is a high performance sewing thread manufactured to sew on automated –
multidirectional machines, the cotton wrap gives a soft finish and gives a wash down look when sewing Denim in
today’s fashion markets.

 Staple Spun Polyester (Coats Astra/A&E Permaspun/Amann Universal)

100% Polyester spun sewing thread is not as strong per size as Corespun threads, will sew well on most sewing
machines, used where cost is a concern.

 Textured Polyester (Coats Gramax/A&E Wildcat/Amann SabaTEX)

A 100% polyester textured sewing thread used mainly in the looper positions on knitwear where coverage and
extension is required.

 Micro Filament Textured Polyester (Coats Seamsoft/A&E Anesoft/Amann sabaSOFT)

100% Polyester Micro Denier textured thread where seam softness is critical like swimwear, beachwear, lingerie,
sportswear or babywear.

 High Elastic Sewing Thread (Coats Eloflex/A&E Aneflex/Amann SabaFLEX)

A P.B.T. thread where elongation in the seam is required without seam cracking occurring, ideal for lockstitch
operations. Use in both the needle and bobbin.

 100% cotton thread (Coats Dymax/A&E Anecot/Amann Mercifil)

100% cotton thread is used mainly for overdyeing garments. Limited seam elongation and strength.

 Continuous Filament Polyester (Coats Gral/Coats Dabond (bonded)/A&E Filan/Amann Serafil or Serabond(bonded))
100% Polyester Continuous Filament sewing thread, also available in a bonded thread mainly used in non-apparel.

Approach to selecting the right interlining together with one of our nominated sources:
 Most fusible interfacing are engineered for specific applications and fuse best under certain conditions and with
certain equipment. The type of equipment the manufacturer has is a key factor in recommending fusible.
Example-for hand iron fusing, a fusible with a multiple temperature adhesive system might be recommend
because the amount of time the operator holds the iron to the fabric and the heat and pressure applied may be
inconsistent.

 Temperature, pressure and dwell times are the most important factors in fusing. It is essential that the fuse line
temperature (temperature between the shell fabric and interfacing at the adhesive) be maintained to ensure
good bond. Temperature and equipment must be checked at least twice a day using test strips or equivalent
equipment.

 There is no one fusible for every kind of shell fabric. Because fabrics vary in construction, fibre content, surface,
finish, shrinkage rate, etc., pre-production testing is essential to determine which fusible interfacing is most
compatible with the shell fabric. We will approve the correct interlining during the sealing and sample stages
where not already specified.

 To establish suitability of interlining, suppliers record bond strength after each complete dry clean or wash and
dry clean cycle, including pressing. The care instructions must be suitable for the type of interlining used for
product.

 BELT / PRESSURE - We recommend that it is of the” continuous belt feed “type with an airline pressure system
(rather than mechanical pressure), as this provides more consistent results.

 Assistance in the location, selection, checking and use of the machine, together with training of the operatives
can be given by your machinery supplier and interlining provider.
