Case Study 1: School Campus Map
The principal of a new school decides to map the entire campus on a coordinate grid using the school's main gate as
the origin O (0, 0). The scale used is 1 unit = 5 metres.
Locations marked on the grid:
Main Gate: O (0, 0) • Library: L (4, 6) • Science Lab: S (10, 6) • Canteen: C (10, 0) • Sports Ground centre: G (7, -4)
32. Answer the following questions based on the case above:
(a) In which quadrant does the Sports Ground centre lie? What does this mean physically (relative to the main
gate)?
(b) Find the actual distance (in metres) between the Library and the Science Lab.
(c) A student walks from the Main Gate to the Library, then to the Science Lab. What is the total distance walked
(in metres)?
(d) The principal wants to place a water cooler exactly midway between the Library and the Canteen. Find the
coordinates of the water cooler's location.
(e) A flag post stands at the exact centre of the rectangle formed by O, C, S and L (assume these form a
rectangle). Find the flag post's coordinates. Verify that it is equidistant from all four corners.
Case Study 2: GPS Navigation System
A delivery app uses a coordinate grid where each unit = 1 km. The warehouse is at W (0, 0).
