Q.

A plant breeder wants to compare eight wheat varieties A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H using a

balanced incomplete block design (BIBD) because it is not possible to test all varieties in
every block. The experiment uses 14 blocks, each block containing 4 plots (one plot per
variety in that block). The layout and observed yields (kg/plot) are given below. Assume one
observation per plot and that the usual BIBD model holds.

Parameters: v = 8 varieties, b = 14 blocks, k = 4 plots per block, r = 7 replications per variety,

Block Varieties Yield (kg/plot)

1 A, B, C, D 45, 47, 44, 46

2 A, B, E, F 48, 46, 49, 47

3 A, B, G, H 46, 45, 48, 47

4 A, C, E, G 47, 44, 50, 46

5 A, C, F, H 49, 46, 47, 48

6 A, D, E, H 46, 48, 51, 49

7 A, D, F, G 48, 47, 46, 50

8 B, C, E, H 47, 45, 49, 48

9 B, C, F, G 46, 48, 47, 49

10 B, D, E, G 49, 46, 50, 48

11 B, D, F, H 48, 47, 48, 50

12 C, D, E, F 45, 47, 49, 46

13 C, D, G, H 47, 46, 51, 49

14 E, F, G, H 50, 48, 52, 51

Grand total = 2659; N = 56; Grand mean ≈ 47.482.

Q2. A plant breeder wishes to compare seven soybean varieties A, B, C, D, E, F and G using
a balanced incomplete block design (BIBD). The experiment uses blocks of size 3 so that
not all varieties appear in every block. The BIBD parameters and observed yields (kg/plot)
are given below. Assume one observation per plot and that the usual BIBD model holds.

Parameters: v = 7 varieties, choose λ = 1. Use k = 3 (plots per block). Determine r and b from
BIBD relations and verify them.
Block Varieties Yield (kg/plot)

1 A, B, C 38, 40, 39

2 A, D, E 41, 39, 42

3 A, F, G 40, 38, 41

4 B, D, F 39, 41, 40

5 B, E, G 42, 40, 41

6 C, D, G 38, 42, 43

7 C, E, F 39, 41, 40
