Matter – Complete Notes

1. What is Matter?

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.

Everything around us is made of matter.

2. States of Matter

• Solid – definite shape and volume.

• Liquid – definite volume but no fixed shape.
• Gas – neither fixed shape nor fixed volume.
• Plasma – fourth state of matter found at very high temperatures.

3. Atoms and Molecules

• Matter is made of tiny particles called atoms.

• Atoms combine to form molecules.
• Example: Water (H■O) contains 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

4. Kinetic Theory of Matter

Main Points:
1. All matter is made of particles (atoms, molecules, ions).
2. There is space between particles (interparticle space).
3. There is a force of attraction between particles.
4. Particles are always in random motion and possess kinetic energy.
5. Higher temperature → faster particle motion → greater kinetic energy.

5. Activity: Potassium Permanganate Experiment

Aim: To prove that matter is composed of tiny particles.

Observation: Colour becomes lighter on adding more water.
Conclusion: One crystal contains millions of tiny particles that spread throughout water.

6. Force of Attraction Between Particles

• Particles attract each other.

• Attraction is strongest in solids, weaker in liquids, and weakest in gases.
• Attraction decreases when interparticle distance increases.

7. Activity: Chalk and Iron Nail

Aim: To show force of attraction between particles.

Observation: Chalk breaks easily, iron nail is difficult to break.
Conclusion: Force of attraction is stronger in iron than in chalk.
8. Important Facts

• Atom means indivisible.

• Atom size ≈ 0.1–0.5 nanometre.
• 1 nanometre = 10■■ m.
• Indian philosopher Rishi Kanada proposed the idea of atom (anu).
