📖 PMLS Lesson 5
1. Definition of Curriculum

● Origin: From the Latin currere = “to run.”

→ Education is like a race or journey students must complete.

● Meaning: A set of knowledge, skills, tools, and methods used to achieve specific
learning goals.

● It includes:

○ Content students must learn.

○ Teaching methods and materials.

○ Systems for measuring and evaluating learning.

✅ In short: Curriculum = structured plan that guides what, how, and why students learn.
🏛️ 2. Medical Technology Curriculum
● CHED (Commission on Higher Education)

○ Created under R.A. 7722 (Higher Education Act of 1992).

○ Oversees public and private higher education.

○ Has a Technical Committee for Medical Technology Education (TCMTE) to

set standards and evaluate schools.

📘 BSMT/BSMLS Program
● Type: Allied health course (like Nursing, Pharmacy, PT).

● Length: 4 years

○ Years 1–3: General Education + Professional subjects

○ Year 4: Internship in CHED-accredited laboratories

● Based on: CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 13, s. 2017

○ Specifies policies, curriculum content, and program outcomes.

● Lecture Unit: 1 hour per week

● Laboratory Unit: 3 hours per week

○ Example: Clinical Bacteriology = 5 units (3 lec + 2 lab) → 9 hours/week.

⚙️ Prerequisite System
📌 Example: Clinical Bacteriology → before Immunology & Serology.
Some subjects must be taken before others.

🎓 3. General Education (GE) Courses

Purpose: Build well-rounded individuals — emotionally, socially, and intellectually.

Goals:

● Develop compassion, self-awareness, cultural respect.

● Encourage critical thinking, cooperation, and self-improvement.
