Lesson Plan: Writing with Technology

Lesson Objectives
- Students will recognize different writing registers.
- Students will explore model texts online.
- Students will understand writing as a process using word processors.
- Students will complete a short collaborative writing activity.
- Students will use grammar-checking tools to improve their writing.
- Students will observe a live demonstration of technology-assisted writing.
Materials
- Projector/Smartboard
- Laptops/tablets
- Google Docs or similar tool
- Sample texts (formal email, informal message)
Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-up (5 min)
Show students two short messages: one formal email and one informal text message. Ask:
'Who is the audience? Which one is formal/informal?'
2. Recognizing Register (10 min)
Students work in pairs. They receive three short texts and decide which audience each is
written for. Then they rewrite one text in a different register.
3. Writing as a Process (10 min)
Teacher demonstrates how to draft, edit, and revise using Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Highlight tools such as comments, track changes, and grammar check.
4. Collaborative Writing Activity (15 min)
Students join a shared Google Doc in groups of 3 and write a short paragraph describing
their school. Each student takes a role:
- Student A: Planner (lists ideas)
- Student B: Writer (drafts the sentences)
- Student C: Editor (checks grammar using built-in grammar tools)
5. Practical Demonstration (Included Activity)
Teacher performs a live demonstration of technology-assisted writing:
1. Open a blank Google Doc and type a sentence with an error (e.g., 'My school have a big
garden.').
2. Show students how the grammar checker identifies the mistake.
3. Apply the correction and explain the grammatical change.
4. Invite students to provide another sentence for correction.
5. Demonstrate real-time collaboration by showing two cursors editing the document
simultaneously.
6. Highlight how comments and suggestions work.
6. Review & Reflection (5 min)
Groups present their final paragraph. Discuss how technology helped them work faster and
better.
