PRACTICE PROBLEM

(D.C MOTOR)
1. A 4-pole, 240V, wave connected shunt motor gives 11.19k W when running at 1000rpm and
drawing armature and field current of 50A and 1A respectively. It has 540 conductors. Its resistance
is 0.1 Ω. Assuming a drop of 1V per brush, determine
(a) Gross torque (b) Useful torque
(c) Useful flux per pole (d) efficiency

2. A 220V, D.C. shunt motor runs at 500rpm when the armature current is 50A. Calculate the speed if
the torque is doubled. Assume Ra=0.2 Ω.

3. Find the Gross torque and useful torque of 220V, 4-pole series motor with 800 wave connected
armature conductors. It is supplying a load of 8.2kW while drawing 45A from mains. Flux per pole is
25mWb and Ra=0.6 Ω.

4. A 440V, 4-pole, lap connected shunt motor has a no load input current of 15A, and a shunt field
current of 10A. At full load it takes a current of 150A. If armature resistance is 0.1 Ω, flux per pole at
no load is 0.05Wb, Z=750 and Vb=2V. Calculate

(i) No-load speed (ii) Full load speed (iii) Speed Regulation

If Armature reaction weakens the field by 1.5% on full load.

5. A 220V, D.C. shunt motor takes 60A when running at 800 rpm. It has an armature resistance of 0.1
Ω. Determine the speed and armature current if the magnetic flux is weakens by 20%. Assuming a
brush drop of 2V and torque remain constant.

6. A DC Shunt motor takes an armature current of 50A at its rated voltage of 240V. It has an armature
resistance of 0.2 Ω. If an external resistance of 1 Ω is inserted in series with the armature with field
unchanged, then calculate the percentage increase/decrease in speed for the same load torque.

7. A 250V, D.C. shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 Ω and field resistance of 250 Ω. When
driving a constant torque load at 600 rpm, the motor draws 21A. What will be the new speed of the
motor if an additional 250 Ω resistance is inserted in series in the field circuit?

8. A 15k W, 4-pole, 230V dc shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.2 Ω and 882 lap connected
armature conductors. It delivers its rated load at 1150 rpm, while drawing an armature current of
73A, at a field current of 1.6A. Calculate the developed torque. Also find the new operating speed if
the field flux reduces by 80% for the same torque developed.

9. A 230 V DC shunt motor with constant field drives a load whose torque is proportional to speed.
When running at 750rpm it takes 30A. Find the speed at which it will run if a 10 Ω resistance is
connected in series with the armature. Neglect armature resistance.

10. A 440 V DC shunt motor has a no load speed of 2000rpm. It is running at 1000 rpm at full load
torque, reduced armature voltage and rated field current. If load torque is reduced to 50% of rated
value with armature voltage and field current held constant as previous, the speed increases to 1050
rpm. Find the armature voltage drop at full load.

12. A 230VDC shunt motor has field resistance of 115 Ω and armature circuit resistance of 0.4 Ω. This
motor drives a constant torque load and takes an armature current of 20A at 800rpm. If motor speed

it has to take the same current at the same voltage at 600 rpm.
