1. Objective
The primary objective of this project is to design and implement an intelligent, IoT-based Smart
Plant Monitoring System that automates the process of irrigation and health tracking for indoor
and outdoor plants.

The specific goals are:

 To monitor soil moisture, ambient temperature, and humidity in real-time.

 To implement an autonomous watering system that triggers a pump only when soil
moisture falls below a certain threshold, preventing water wastage.
 To provide a remote monitoring interface via the Blynk IoT platform, allowing users to
track plant health from anywhere in the world.
 To ensure water resource management by monitoring the water level in the storage tank
using ultrasonic sensors.
 To create a cost-effective and scalable solution suitable for urban gardening,
greenhouses, and small-scale agriculture.

2. Background
In the modern era of urbanization, many people enjoy maintaining home gardens or indoor
plants. However, due to busy work schedules, frequent travel, or lack of knowledge about
specific plant needs, these plants often suffer from over-watering or under-watering, leading to
wilting and death.

Traditional irrigation methods are manual and lack precision. There is a significant gap between
manual labor-intensive gardening and high-end industrial agricultural systems. This project
bridges that gap by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology. By using low-cost sensors
and microcontrollers like the ESP32, we can create a "talking plant" that communicates its
needs directly to the user's smartphone, ensuring optimal growth conditions while conserving
water.

3. Abstract
This project presents an Integrated Smart Plant Monitoring System built on the ESP32 platform.
The system utilizes a Soil Moisture Sensor to detect the hydration level of the soil and a DHT11
sensor to monitor atmospheric temperature and humidity. An Ultrasonic sensor is employed to
measure the water depth in the reservoir tank, providing alerts when a refill is required.

The core logic is handled by the ESP32, which processes sensor data and controls a 5V DC
water pump via a Relay module. The system operates in two modes: Automatic Mode, where
the pump is triggered based on sensor thresholds, and Manual Mode, where the user can
control the pump via the Blynk Mobile App. Data is displayed locally on a 16x2 I2C LCD screen
and globally on the Blynk Cloud dashboard. This setup ensures that plants receive the exact
amount of water needed, promoting sustainable gardening practices.
4. Introduction and Applications
Agriculture and gardening are undergoing a digital transformation. The "Smart Plant Monitoring
System" is a step towards precision horticulture. Unlike standard timers, this system responds
to the actual physiological needs of the plant.

Key Features:

 Precision Irrigation: Uses sensors to determine the exact moment the plant needs
water.
 Dual Monitoring: Combines local hardware display (LCD) with global cloud access
(Blynk App).
 Safety Mechanisms: Includes a buzzer alert for low water levels in the tank and LEDs
for visual status indication (Red for dry, Green for hydrated).
 IoT Connectivity: Built-in Wi-Fi of the ESP32 ensures seamless data transmission to
the cloud.

Novelty of the Project:

1. Cost-Effectiveness: Uses affordable consumer electronics rather than expensive

industrial PLC systems.
2. User-Centric Design: The Blynk interface provides an intuitive GUI with gauges and
charts for historical data analysis.
3. Efficiency: Optimized for low power consumption, allowing it to be potentially powered
by small batteries or solar panels.
4. Hybrid Control: Offers both autonomous logic and manual override capabilities.

Applications:

 Urban Home Gardening: Ideal for apartment dwellers who keep balcony plants.
 Commercial Greenhouses: Provides a scalable way to monitor micro-climates for
exotic plants.
 Smart Offices: Maintains indoor air-purifying plants with zero manual effort.
 Vertical Farming: Helps in managing water distribution in stacked plant configurations.
 Nursery Management: Automates the repetitive task of watering hundreds of saplings.

5. Tools & Technologies Used

The system is divided into Hardware and Software layers to ensure modularity and ease of
maintenance.

Hardware Components:

 ESP32 Development Board: The brain of the system, featuring dual-core processing
and integrated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth.
 Soil Moisture Sensor (Capacitive/Resistive): Measures the volumetric water content
in soil.
 DHT11 Sensor: A digital sensor that provides calibrated temperature and humidity
readings.
 Ultrasonic Sensor (HC-SR04): Measures distance to determine the water level in the
tank.
 16x2 I2C LCD Display: Provides a local interface for real-time sensor values.
 Relay Module (5V): Acts as an electronic switch to control the high-power water pump.
 Submersible Water Pump: Delivers water from the tank to the plant.
 Buzzer & LEDs: Provide audio-visual alerts for critical states (Low water/Dry soil).
 Breadboard/PCB & Jumper Wires: For circuit connections.
Software Technologies:

 Arduino IDE: Used for writing and uploading the C++ code to the ESP32.
 Blynk IoT Platform: Provides the cloud backend and mobile application interface.
 C/C++ Programming: Logic implementation for sensor calibration and thresholding.
 I2C Protocol: For communication between the ESP32 and the LCD screen.

6. System Design & Architecture

The system follows a feedback-loop architecture. The sensors (Input) constantly feed data to
the ESP32 (Processing). The ESP32 compares these values against pre-defined set-points. If
the soil moisture is low, the ESP32 sends a signal to the Relay (Output), which activates the
Pump.

Simultaneously, the data is packaged and sent via Wi-Fi to the Blynk Cloud. The user's mobile
app subscribes to these data streams, updating gauges and charts in real-time. If the ultrasonic
sensor detects that the water tank is nearly empty, the ESP32 triggers a Buzzer to prevent the
pump from running dry (Dry-run protection).

7. Work Plan
The development of the Smart Plant Monitoring System is divided into five distinct phases:

 Phase 1: Research and Component Sourcing: Identifying the water requirements of

different plant types and selecting appropriate sensors for those needs.
 Phase 2: Hardware Interfacing: Connecting sensors to the ESP32 and verifying the
data accuracy on the Serial Monitor.
 Phase 3: Logic and IoT Integration: Writing the automation code and configuring the
Blynk Dashboard with virtual pins.
 Phase 4: Prototype Assembly: Mounting the components on a chassis or 3D-printed
enclosure and conducting field tests with actual plants.
 Phase 5: Performance Evaluation and Reporting: Monitoring the system's reliability
over a week, analyzing water savings, and preparing the final documentation.
8. Future Scope
The current prototype can be significantly enhanced with the following features:

 Solar Power Integration: Adding a solar panel and Li-ion battery management system
to make it 100% energy independent.
 AI-Based Growth Prediction: Using machine learning to analyze humidity/temperature
patterns and predict the best harvest or pruning times.
 Nutrient Dispensing: Adding additional tanks and pumps to dispense liquid fertilizers
based on soil NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) sensors.
 Voice Assistant Integration: Allowing users to ask "Hey Google/Alexa, how is my Rose
plant doing?"
 Multi-Plant Expansion: Designing a manifold system where one ESP32 can control
multiple valves for different plants with varying water needs.
