24. (i) Aditi noticed the change in colour of sodium carbonate solution when a few drops of phenolphthalein 2
are added. This indicates sodium carbonate is basic in nature. Red litmus paper turned blue when
dipped in sodium carbonate solution which indicates that bases turn red litmus paper to blue and acids
turns blue litmus to red.
(ii) Sulphuric acid show no color change with phenolphthalein which indicates it’s acidic nature. It does
not convert red litmus paper to blue. Which represent acidic nature.
(iii) Sodium chloride is natural salt, they do not show any change with any of the indicators.
OR
Observation: The bulb will glow when Amita takes solutions of sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid but
the bulb will not glow in the solutions of glucose and ethyl alcohol.
Conclusion: Glowing of the bulb indicates that there is a flow of electric current through the solutions.
Sulphuric acid produces H + ions and sodium hydroxide is a base which produces OH − (𝑎𝑞)
ions. H + (𝑎𝑞) and OH − (𝑎𝑞) are responsible for conduction of electricity.
Though glucose and ethyl alcohol contain hydrogen but they do not produce either H + ions
or OH − ions so there is no conduction of electricity and the bulb does not glow.
25. (a) The basic filtration units in the kidneys are nephrons. 2
The substances which are selectively reabsorbed as the filtrate flows along the tubular part of this unit
are glucose, amino acids, salts and a major amount of water. (any
two)
(b) The urine formation involves three steps:
Glomerular filtration/Ultra filtration: Nitrogenous wastes, glucose, water, amino acid filter from the
blood into Bowman's capsule of the nephron under high pressure.
Tubular reabsorption: Useful substances from the filtrate are reabsorbed back by capillaries
surrounding the nephron.
26. We cannot say anything about the hair colour trait on the basis of the given information. 2
In case the trait is dominant: The genotype of the parents will be BB

3|Page
In case the trait is dominant when parents are heterozygous: Genotype of the parents will be Bb

Only 25% of children would be brown haired.

In case the trait is recessive: The genotype of the parents will be bb.

All the children will have black hair in first and third cases. But in second case, only 25% of the children
have brown hair. Thus, we can say that the black hair is dominant trait.

27. Ozone (O3 ) is a molecule formed by three atoms of oxygen. It is a highly poisonous gas present in the 3
upper layers of the atmosphere (stratosphere).
The ultraviolet radiation (UV) splits some molecules of oxygen into free oxygen atoms. These atoms then
combine with the molecular oxygen to form ozone in the upper layers of the atmosphere.
UV
O2 ⟶ O + O
O + O2 ⟶ O3

Ozone layer is very important for the existence of life on earth because it prevents harmful ultraviolet
(UV) radiations coming from the sun, which can cause skin cancer and catract.

30. (a) ' X ' is lateral displacement. The emergent ray GH is shifted sideways from the direction of original 3
incident ray EF. This is called lateral displacement. It depends on
• refractive index of glass slab
• thickness of glass slab
(b) The point where two refractions takes place are ' 𝐹 ' and ' 𝐺 '. On passing through a rectangular glass
slab a ray of light suffers two refractions one while going from air to glass slab and the other while going

31. (a) The twinkling of a star is due to atmospheric refraction of starlight. The atmospheric refraction occurs in a 3
medium gradually changing refractive index. Since, the atmosphere bends starlight towards the normal,
the apparent position of the star is slightly different from its actual position. This apparent position of stars
is not stationary, but keeps on changing slightly as the physical conditions of the earth's atmosphere are
not stationary. As the stars are very distant, they are approximately point sized sources of light. The path
of ray of light coming from the star goes on varying slightly, the apparent position of the star fluctuates and
the amount of starlight entering the eye flickers-the star sometimes appear brighter and at other time,
fainter, which is the twinkling effect.
(b) The sky appears dark instead of blue to an astronaut because there is no atmosphere so there is no
scattering of light.
(c) Different rays have different wavelengths. Different wavelengths deviate differently in the prism because
the angle of refraction for different colours having different wavelengths is different while passing
through the glass prism.
32. (a) The type of chemical reaction shown is electrolytic decomposition reaction. When a decomposition 3
(i.e. break down of reactant to give simpler products) is carried out by the passage of electricity it is called
decomposition reaction.

(c) Hydrogen gas is evolved at cathode. We can test it by taking a burning matchstick near the mouth of
the test tube, it will burn with a pop sound. Oxygen gas is evolved at anode. We can test oxygen gas by
taking a burning match stick near the mouth of the test tube, it will burn brightly.
33. (a) It is necessary to separate oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in mammals and birds to prevent 3
oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing. Such separation allows a highly efficient supply of
oxygen to the body. This is useful in animals that have high energy needs which constantly use the energy
to maintain their body temperature.
(b) The distributing vessels are arteries and the collecting vessels are veins. Differences between arteries
and veins.

(a) It is necessary to connect an earth wire to electric appliances having metallic wire as a safety measure.
The metallic body is connected to the earth wire, which provides a low resistance conducting path for the
current. So it ensures that any leakage of current to the metallic body of the appliances keeps its potential
to that of the earth and the user will not get electric shock.
(b) Fuse is placed in series with the device in the electric circuit.
It consists of a piece of wire made of a metal or an alloy of appropriate melting point, for example copper,
aluminium, iron etc.
The fuse protects the circuits and appliances by stopping the flow of any unduly electric current, i.e.
overloading. When current in a circuit exceeds the value of fuse rating, the fuse wire burns due to
overloading. This causes a gap in the circuit and the current stops flowing in the circuit. The burnt out fuse
should be replaced by another fuse of identical rating so that the circuit or the appliances connected in
the circuit continue to function without any damage in future.
(c) Suppose 𝑥 is the number of bulbs that can be used.

(i) The uterus prepares itself every month to receive and nurture the growing embryo. The lining of uterus
gets thickens and spongy and is richly supplied with blood to nourish the growing embryo and a special
dick like tissue called placenta is formed.
(ii) If zygote is not formed, the lining of the uterus which gets become thickened and spongy is not required
now. So the lining slowly breaks and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous in the form
of menstrual flow.

(a) After fertilization,
(i) Sepals and petals shrivel and fall off.
(ii) Style and stigma also fall off. Ovary grows rapidly and form a fruit.
(iii) Anther and filament also shrivel and fall off.
(b) Germination: Initial stages in the growth of a seed to develop into a seedling under appropriate
conditions.

36. (a) Homologous series is a series of compounds in which the same functional group substitutes for 5
hydrogen in a carbon chain. For example, CH4 and C2 H6 are homologues.
(b) C3 H7 OH and C4 H9 OH are homologues as
• the difference in the formulae of these compounds is CH2
• the difference in the molecular masses of these compounds is 14u.
(c) The next homologue of C3 H6 O is C4 H8 O
Structural formula

(d) Isomers: Chemical compounds that have identical chemical formulae but differ in properties and the
arrangement of atoms in the molecule are called isomers.
Preceding homologue of C5 H12 is C4 H10.
Its isomers are

(a) It is because carbon has four valence electrons, it cannot gain or lose four electrons because high
energy is needed. It can only share four electrons.
(b) It is due to strong covalent bonds and compact structure of diamond.
(c) It is due to presence of free electrons in graphite because each carbon is linked to three more carbon
atoms.
(d) As acetylene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon, it burns with sooty or smoky flame.
(e) Kerosene oil is mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, therefore, does not decolourise bromine water
while cooking oils contain unsaturated fattyacids so they do not colourise bromine water.

37. (a) Rohit's sister suffered from goitre. The doctor has advised her to eat iodised salt as iodine present in 4
iodised salt is needed to produce thyroxine hormone by thyroid gland. Thyroxine regulates carbohydrate,
protein and fat metabolism in our body and provide the best balance for growth. In case iodine is deficient
in our diet, there is a possibility that we may suffer from goitre.
(b) Adrenaline hormone is known as emergency hormone or stress hormone. Whenever a person is under
stress, a hormone called adrenaline is secreted from adrenal glands directly into the blood and carried to
different parts of the body. The target organ on which it acts is heart. As a result, the heart beats faster,
resulting in supply of more oxygen to our muscles. The blood to the digestive system and skin is reduced
due to contraction of muscles around small arteries in these organs. This diverts the blood to our skeletal
muscles. The breathing rate also increases because of the contractions of the diaphragm and rib muscles.
All these responses together enable the animal body to be ready to deal with the situation.
OR
(b) Insulin hormone is secreted by pancreas. Pancreas secretes hormones as well as enzymes. Insulin
hormone helps in regulating the metabolism of sugar. When pancreas does not produce and secrete
sufficient amount of insulin into blood, then the sugar level in the blood rises. Therefore, the patient
excretes sugar in urine. The people having severe diabetes are treated by giving injections of insulin.
38. (a) In parallel combination 4
