The given reaction is a redox reaction because reduction of MnO2 and oxidation of HCl takes place in
the given reaction.
22. (i) Swollen neck in people living in the hills: 2
A swollen neck, especially in people living in mountainous regions, could be a sign of a condition called
goiter. This occurs when the thyroid gland, located in the front of your neck, becomes enlarged. A
common cause of goiter in such areas is iodine deficiency. Iodine is essential for the proper production
of thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism and growth. Without enough iodine, the thyroid gland
may overwork to try to produce enough hormones, leading to swelling.
(ii) Over secretion of growth hormone during childhood
If a child experiences an overproduction of growth hormone during childhood, it can lead to a condition
called gigantism. This causes excessive growth in height, bones, and organs. Gigantism is typically
caused by a tumour in the pituitary gland, which is responsible for releasing growth hormone.
23. (A) Laws of refraction of light 2
• The incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the surface at the point of incidence all lie
in one plane.
• For any two given pair of media, the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the
angle of refraction is a constant. Snell's law

(B) Absolute refractive index: Ratio of velocity of light in vacuum to velocity of light in the medium.
𝑐
n=
𝒗
Given:
Absolute refractive index of glass (n) = 3.0
Speed of light in vacuum (c) = 3 × 108 m/s
To find the speed of light in glass (v), we rearrange the formula for the absolute refractive index
𝑐
n=𝑣
𝑐
or, v=𝑛
Substituting the given values:
3 × 108
v= 3.0
= 1.0 × 108 m/s
So, the speed of light in glass is 1.0 × 108 m/s.
24. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants produce food (glucose) and oxygen from carbon dioxide 2
and water, using light energy. The released oxygen can be utilised by the plant for respiration.
The carbon dioxide released by the plant after respiration is utilise by the plants to photosynthesise
food; hence, the plant was able to survive. Without sunlight, the plant cannot generate the energy it
needs to sustain itself. In addition, without oxygen, the plant in the dark couldn't carry out proper
respiration, a process necessary to release energy from stored sugars.
25. (A) From Ohm's law, we have 2
V = IR

Given V = 12 V and R1 = 2 ohm, R 2 = 8 ohm and R 3 = 8 ohm
Therefore,
(R ×R3 )
Net resistance R = R1 + (R2
2 +R3 )
8×8
= 2 + 8+8 = 2 + 4
= 6 ohm

(i) The magnetic field at P and Q is the same. Because the magnetic field lines inside the helical coil of
wire which behaves like a solenoid is uniform/in the form of parallel straight lines.
(ii) Increasing/Decreasing the number of turn in the coil
Increasing/Decreasing the current through the coil.
26. Arrow A will represent more energy transfer as compared to C and E. 2
Arrow B will represent more energy transfer as compared to D.
When green plants are eaten by primary consumers, a great amount of energy is lost as heat to the
environment. Some amount goes into digestion and in doing work and the rest goes towards growth
and reproduction. An average of 10% of the food eaten is made available for the next level of
consumers. This loss of energy takes place at every trophic level. 1 Alternatively, in accordance with 10%
law of transfer of energy in a food chain only 10% of energy available at one trophic level is transferred
to the next trophic level.

Question No. 27 to 33 are short answer questions
27. (a) Sodium bicarbonate/Sodium hydrogen carbonate/baking soda and its formula is NaHCO3 3
heat
(b) 2NaHCO3 → Na2 CO3 + CO2 + H2 O
(c) It is used in fire extinguishers and for baking.
28. (i) Loss of sensation of feeling full (stomach fullness) This could be due to malfunctioning in the 3
hypothalamus or the vagus nerve.
Hypothalamus: Located at the base of the brain, the hypothalamus is responsible for regulating
hunger and satiety (feeling full). It receives signals from the stomach about its fullness and sends
signals back to control eating behaviour. Damage to the hypothalamus can disrupt these signals,
leading to loss of sensation of feeling full.
Vagus nerve: This nerve carries signals between the brain and the digestive system. It plays a role in
transmitting fullness signals from the stomach to the brain. Damage to the vagus nerve can also
affect the sensation of feeling full.
(ii) Lowered ability to salivate
This points towards a potential issue in the pons or the salivatory nuclei.
Pons: This part of the brainstem is involved in regulating various automatic functions, including
salivation. It relays signals between the brain and the salivary glands. Dysfunction in the pons can
disrupt these signals and reduce saliva production.
Salivatory nuclei: These are clusters of nerve cells located in the brainstem that control the salivary
glands. Damage to these nuclei can directly affect the ability to salivate.
(iii) Difficulty in maintaining posture and balance
This can be caused by problems in the cerebellum, vestibular system or basal ganglia.
Cerebellum: Located at the back of the brain, the cerebellum coordinates muscle movements and
helps maintain balance. Damage to the cerebellum can lead to postural instability and difficulty
maintaining balance.
Vestibular system: This system, located in the inner ear, plays a crucial role in balance and spatial
orientation. Dysfunction in the vestibular system can cause dizziness, vertigo and problems with
balance.
Basal ganglia: These are a group of structures deep within the brain that are involved in motor
control and coordination. Degeneration of the basal ganglia can contribute to tremors, rigidity and
difficulty maintaining posture.
29. Changes in the fertilised egg: 3
• Zygote/fertilised egg start dividing.
• Implantation of the zygote in the inner uterine wall.
• Embryo starts growing with the help of the placenta which results in the development of the
child.
• Birth of a child as a result of rhythmic contraction of the muscles in the uterus.
• When an egg is not fertilised, the inner lining of the uterus slowly breaks and comes out through
the vagina as blood and mucous (Menstruation)

1 1 1
= +
R total 60 30
1 3

36. (a) A pair of kidneys, a pair of ureters, a urinary bladder and a urethra. 5
(b) A kidney has a large number of filtration units called nephrons. Each nephron has cup shaped
Bowman's capsule containing a bunch of capillaries called glomerulus. Blood gets filtered in the
glomerulus. Filtrate gets collected in Bowman's capsule. Some useful substances such as glucose,
amino acids, salts and water are selectively re-absorbed as urine flows through nephron tube. The
urine formed in each kidney is eventually stored in the urinary bladder.

(i) The two modes of asexual reproduction observed in hydra are: Budding and Regeneration.
Budding in Hydra: In budding, a small part of the body of the parents grows out as a 'bud' which then
detaches and becomes a new organism. Hydra reproduces by budding using the regenerative cells. A
bud develops as an outgrowth in hydra due to repeated cell division at one specific site. When fully
mature, the bud detaches itself from the parent body and develops into new independent individuals.

Regeneration in Hydra: In this method, small cut or broken parts of the organisms' body grow or
regenerate into separate individuals. Regeneration of hydra from the body parts is carried out by
specialised cells, which proliferate and make a large number of cells.

(ii) Vegetative propagation is the development of a new plant from the vegetative parts
(roots, stem and leaves) of a plant.
(iii) Advantages: Such plants can bear flowers and fruits earlier than those produced from seeds.
Allows propagation of plants (banana, orange, etc.) that have lost the capacity to produce seeds. All
plants produced are genetically similar to the parent plant and hence have all its characteristics.

Question No. 37 to 39 are case-based/data -based questions.
37. (A) 4
(i) P is an unsaturated compound.
Justification:
A saturated hydrocarbon molecule with 6 carbon atoms would have the general formula C6 H14.
Compound P has only 12 hydrogens, which is 2 fewer than a saturated molecule.
This deficiency in hydrogens indicates the presence of at least one double bond between two carbon
atoms, making it unsaturated.
Structural formula:
Here's an example of a possible structural formula for

6
P: CH3 − CH2 − CH = CH − CH2 − CH3 (Hex-3-ene)
This is one of the many possible structures for a molecule with C6H12. The double bond can be located at
different positions within the carbon chain.
(ii) Test for saturation: Bromine test
A simple test to differentiate between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons is the bromine test:
1. Add a few drops of bromine water (Br2 dissolved in water) to a solution or a small amount of the
liquid hydrocarbon compound 𝑃.
2. Observation:
• If P is saturated (no double bonds), the orange colour of bromine water will persist. ( Br2 is not
very soluble in water and remains as a separate orange layer.)
• If P is unsaturated (contains double bonds), the orange colour of bromine will disappear. ( Br2
reacts with the double bond, forming colourless products.) The disappearance of the orange
colour indicates the presence of a double bond in P, confirming its unsaturated nature.
(iii) (A) Products of burning 𝐏
When compound P is burned in excess air (oxygen), a complete combustion reaction occurs. The
products will be:
(i) Carbon dioxide (CO2 )
(ii) Water (H2 O)
OR
(B)
(i) Metal reaction with P:
The gas produced with a "pop" sound suggests it's likely hydrogen gas (H2 ). This points towards P being
an acid (or alcohol) that reacts with a metal to produce a salt and hydrogen gas.
Here's a possible reaction equation:
2RCOOH/ROH + 2M → 2RCOOM/ROM + H2
(ii) Heating P with concentrated sulphuric acid (H2 SO4 ) : Concentrated sulphuric acid acts as a strong
dehydrating agent. When heated with P, it can remove water molecules, potentially forming an alkene
(compound with a double carbon-carbon bond) or an anhydride (depending on the structure of P ).
Here's a general equation (specific product depends on P):

Flame of Q:
• Alkene: If Q is an alkene, it will typically burn with a clean, blue flame due to complete combustion.
• Anhydride: Anhydrides burns with nonluminous blue flames.
(iii) Heating P with ethanoic acid (CH3 COOH) and acid catalyst: Since 𝑃 is already an acid, adding
another acid (ethanoic acid) likely won't cause a significant reaction. However, with an acid catalyst
present, the reaction might be:
• Esterification: If P contains an alcohol functional group, it can react with ethanoic acid (in the
presence of the acid catalyst) to form an ester and water.
Equation (esterification):
P (alcohol) +CH3 COOH (ethanoic acid) → Heat (acid catalyst) → R (ester) +H2 O
38. (i) A cross between two plants, which differ in only one pair of contrasting characters is called 4
monohybrid cross. In this cross, F2 phenotypic ratio is 3:1 and genotypic ratio is 1:2:1.
(ii) Ratio between White: Purple flowers are 1:3.
(iii) (A) Homozygous organism will expressed recessive allele.

is perpendicular to the magnetic field, the direction of force is also perpendicular to both of them.

(iii) (A) (i) According to Fleming's left-hand rule, the rod will get displaced upwards.
(ii) Devices that use current-carrying conductors and magnetic fields are electric motor, electric
generator, loudspeaker, microphones, etc.
OR
(B) The magnetic field lines around a current carrying conductor can be represented by concentric
circles. The direction of the magnetic field can be determined by using Right-Hand Thumb rule.
