Introduction
Consumer rights refer to the rights given to consumers to
protect them from unfair trade practices. Every person who
purchases goods or services for personal use is called a
consumer. Consumer rights help people receive quality
products and services at fair prices.
Who is a Consumer?
A consumer is a person who buys goods or services for
personal use and not for resale.
Examples:
• Buying books for study.
• Purchasing food items for family use.
• Using mobile phone services.
Consumers are important because they drive the economy
through their purchases.
Consumer Rights
The six consumer rights are:
1. Right to Safety
2. Right to Information
3. Right to Choose
4. Right to be Heard
5. Right to Seek Redressal
6. Right to Consumer Education
These rights protect consumers from exploitation.
Consumer Responsibilities
Consumers should:
• Check quality marks like ISI and AGMARK.
• Read labels carefully.
• Ask for bills and receipts.
• Use products properly.
• File complaints when necessary.
• Be aware of their rights.
Responsible consumers help create a fair market.
Consumer Protection Act
The Consumer Protection Act was enacted to safeguard
consumers' interests.
Features:
• Protection against unfair trade practices.
• Quick settlement of disputes.
• Establishment of consumer courts.
• Compensation for losses suffered by consumers.
The Act empowers consumers to seek justice.
Consumer Exploitation
Consumer exploitation occurs when sellers cheat consumers
through:
• Overcharging
• Adulteration
• False advertising
• Selling defective products
• Hoarding and black marketing
Consumer awareness helps reduce exploitation.
Consumer Forums
Consumer disputes can be addressed through:
• District Consumer Commission
• State Consumer Commission
• National Consumer Commission
These bodies provide simple and inexpensive justice to
consumers.
Consumer Awareness
Consumer awareness means knowing one's rights and
responsibilities.
Methods of awareness:
• Education
• Newspapers
• Television
• Internet
• Government campaigns
The famous slogan is:
"Jago Grahak Jago"
Case Study
A customer purchased a defective mobile phone. The
shopkeeper refused to replace it. The customer filed a
complaint in the consumer forum with the purchase bill. After
investigation, the forum ordered replacement and
compensation.
This example shows the importance of consumer rights.
Conclusion
Consumer rights are essential for protecting people from
unfair practices. Every consumer should be aware of their
rights and responsibilities. Awareness, education, and proper
use of consumer protection laws can ensure a fair and safe
marketplace for everyone.
