Essential Study Guide
8th Grade Mathematics & Science
Part 1: Mathematics Mastery
1. Linear Equations & Inequalities
The core of 8th-grade algebra. Focus on isolating variables and understanding
the relationship between numbers.
• Slope-Intercept Form: y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-
intercept.
• Solving for Variables: Remember to perform inverse operations on both
sides (e.g., if adding 10, subtract 10).
• Systems of Equations: Finding the intersection point where two lines meet.
2. Geometry & The Pythagorean Theorem
Understanding spatial relationships and properties of shapes.
• Pythagorean Theorem: a² + b² = c². Applies only to right-angled triangles to
find the hypotenuse (c).
• Angle Relationships:
◦ Complementary angles sum to 90°.
◦ Supplementary angles sum to 180°.
• Volume & Surface Area: Formulas for cylinders, cones, and spheres.
3. Data & Probability
• Measures of Central Tendency: Mean (average), Median (middle), and Mode
(most frequent).
• Probability: Calculating the likelihood of events using the ratio: Desired
Outcomes / Total Outcomes.
Part 2: Science Core Concepts
1. Matter & Chemical Reactions
Identifying how substances interact and change.
• Physical vs. Chemical Changes: Physical changes (melting, dissolving) do
not change the substance's identity. Chemical changes (burning, rusting)
create entirely new substances.
• The Atom: Protons (+), Neutrons (neutral), and Electrons (-).
• Periodic Table Basics: Understanding groups (columns) and periods (rows).
2. Life Science & Genetics
• Cell Theory: The cell is the basic unit of life. Key organelles include the
Nucleus (brain), Mitochondria (energy), and Chloroplasts (plant food).
• Genetics: DNA as the blueprint of life; understanding dominant and
recessive traits.
3. Physical Science (Physics)
• Newton’s Laws of Motion:
1. Inertia: Objects resist changes in motion.
2. Force: F = ma (Force = mass × acceleration).
3. Action/Reaction: For every action, there is an equal and opposite
reaction.
• Energy: Kinetic (motion) vs. Potential (stored).
4. Earth & Space Science
• Seasons: Caused by the 23.5° tilt of Earth's axis as it orbits the Sun.
• Water Cycle: Evaporation, Transpiration, Condensation, and Precipitation.
• Plate Tectonics: Convergent, Divergent, and Transform boundaries.
Study Tip: Focus on the "Why." Instead of just memorizing F = ma, think about why a heavier
object (more mass) requires more force to speed up (acceleration).
