Piecewise Function

Functions that behave differently depending on

the input value.
Evaluating Function
Evaluating a function means to substitute a variable with its given number or
expression.
𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 + 4; 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓 5
𝑓 5 =2 5 +4
𝑓 5 = 10 + 4
𝑓 5 = 14
When x is less than 0, it
gives 5, when x is 0 or
more, it gives 𝑥 2 .
𝑥 2 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 2
𝑓 𝑥 ൞ 6 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 2
10 − 𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 ≤ 6
2, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ 1
ℎ 𝑥 =ቊ
𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 1
Absolute Value Function
- Famous piecewise function
- 2 pieces, below 0, −𝑥 ; from 0 onwards, 𝑥
𝑥, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 0
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 =ቊ
−𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 0
Odd, Even or Neither Functions
- Even Function – whose graph exhibits symmetry about the y-axis. (exactly
the same)
- Odd Function – whose graph exhibits symmetry about the origin. (all the
signs are switched)
- Neither Function – neither exactly the same nor opposite.
𝒇 𝒙 = −𝟑𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟐𝒙𝟑 − 𝟒𝒙 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟐𝒙𝟑 − 𝟑𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟒
Operations with Functions
We can add, subtract, multiply, and divide
functions. The result? A new function!
𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 + 3 ;
𝑔 𝑥 = 𝑥2

Another way to combine two functions to
create a new function.
