Imagine you are visiting a new city and you need to find the hospital, the bank, or the park. You need to
ASK someone for directions — and you need to UNDERSTAND the answer. This is a real-life
communication skill!
Imagina que visitas una ciudad nueva y necesitas encontrar el hospital, el banco o el parque. ¡Necesitas

Before we learn to give directions, we need to know the words! Study the vocabulary below carefully.

Prepositions of place help us explain WHERE something is. We use them to describe the location of buildings
and places in town.
Las preposiciones de lugar nos ayudan a explicar DÓNDE está algo. Las usamos para describir la ubicación de edificios y
lugares en la ciudad.

Use these structures:
The [place] is + [preposition] + the [place].
Examples:
• "The bank is next to the park."
• "The school is across from the hospital."
• "The pharmacy is between the bank and the supermarket."
• "The library is on the corner of Main Street and Oak Avenue."

Person A Excuse me! Can you help me? I'm looking for the library.

Person A Turn left after two blocks, and the library is on the right — next to the park. Is that right?

Person B Exactly! It's a big building. You can't miss it!

Dialogue 2 — Getting to the Hospital / Llegando al Hospital


Person A Excuse me, how do I get to the hospital from here?

Sure! Turn right and go straight for one block. Then cross the street at the traffic light. The hospital

Dialogue 3 — Finding the Supermarket / Encontrando el Supermercado


Person A Excuse me, am I going the right way to the supermarket?

Person B Hmm, actually no. You need to go back one block and then turn right.

Yes! Walk past the school and the supermarket is the next building on your right, between the

📝 SECTION 7 — Grammar: The Imperative / El Imperativo

When giving directions, we use the IMPERATIVE form of the verb. This means we use the BASE FORM of the
verb directly — without a subject!

Al dar indicaciones, usamos la forma IMPERATIVA del verbo. Esto significa que usamos la forma BASE del verbo
directamente — ¡sin sujeto!

📌 Imperative — Positive & Negative / Positivo y Negativo

✅ POSITIVE IMPERATIVE / POSITIVO ❌ NEGATIVE IMPERATIVE / NEGATIVO

Structure: Verb + rest of sentence Structure: Do not / Don't + Verb

"Go straight two blocks." "Don't turn left — turn right!"

"Turn left at the corner." "Do not cross the street yet."

"Cross the street here." "Don't go past the park."

"Walk past the school." "Don't take the first street."

"Take the first right." "Don't go back — it's ahead."

💡 Remember! / ¡Recuerda!

• In the imperative, you do NOT say the subject ('you'). It is already understood.

WRONG: 'You go straight.' ✗ CORRECT: 'Go straight.' ✓

• You can add 'please' to make it more polite: 'Please turn right at the corner.'

• You can add 'then' to connect steps: 'Go straight, then turn left, then cross the street.'
