HCI ARCHITECTURE & SYSTEM DESIGN

Vertical Transit Systems at Megastructure

Scale
Subject: Alternative Control Interfaces for a 10,000-Floor Elevator Car
Design Iteration: Phase II — Converged Conceptual Framework & Technical Layouts

1. Architectural Context & Design Framework

Designing a vertical transport interface for a 10,000-floor megastructure presents an unprecedented

challenge in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). At an assumed altitude of 30,000 meters and a
maximum transit velocity of v = 20.5 m/s, a non-stop journey from the ground floor to the apex takes
approximately t = 24.4 minutes. When incorporating realistic deceleration profiles, safety buffers, and
intermediate stops, standard transit durations easily approach 35 to 45 minutes. Furthermore, a cabin built
to support this scale must act as a mass transit vehicle, accommodating dozens or hundreds of
passengers simultaneously.

An initial exploratory round of ten sketches investigated the broad problem space, analyzing conventional
touchscreens, voice recognition, wearables, and biometric scanning. The primary insight derived from this
exploration is that traditional linear entry models fail catastrophically at scale. An interface that
requires users to parse a sequential list or execute continuous operations over an order of magnitude of N
= 10,000 options induces massive cognitive load, spatial disorientation, and extreme physical congestion
within a crowded cabin. To resolve these failures, four design criteria and constraints were established to
strictly govern the development of the secondary refined concepts.

Derived Criteria and Constraints

Constraint 1: Anti-Linear Scale & Cognitive Load Boundary

The control interface must reject any interaction paradigm that scales linearly with the number of
floors. Forcing a passenger to manually scroll, visually scan, or linearly search through thousands of
options creates decision paralysis. Successful designs must automatically abstract or filter the 10,000
destinations into discrete, multi-tiered micro-choices containing no more than ten items per
interaction level.

Criterion 2: Crowded-Space Friction Reduction (Pre-Boarding Separation)
Because elevator cabins house hundreds of passengers simultaneously, the primary interaction point
for selecting a destination floor must occur outside the moving vessel (Destination Dispatch model),
or completely passively from a fixed, personal passenger zone. Requiring physical movement toward
a centralized panel inside a packed cabin introduces severe physical friction, transit delays, and
accessibility bottlenecks.

Criterion 3: Multi-Sensory Temporal Pacing & Psychosocial Comfort

An enclosed 30-to-45 minute vertical commute causes psychological isolation, claustrophobia, and
motion anxiety due to rapid barometric shifts. The interface cannot merely state the current floor
number; it must actively provide continuous, rich, multi-sensory feedback (visual, structural, and
environmental) regarding altitude, true velocity, structural layout, and localized destination ETAs to
ground passengers within the timeline of their journey.

Constraint 4: Universal Device Independence & Fail-Safe Redundancy

The vertical transit network forms the primary infrastructure of the building and must remain fully
usable by all demographics under all conditions. The system cannot rely exclusively on user-owned,
high-end personal technology, such as smartphones, specific apps, or advanced wearables. It must
provide physical, device-independent interaction points accessible to children, tourists, elderly
populations, and individuals with dead device batteries or zero network connectivity.

2. Refined Control Interface Concepts (Sketches 11–20)

The following ten architectural schematics and interface definitions represent the disciplined application of
the criteria above. They eliminate internal cabin panels, prevent linear scaling, and ensure absolute
operational redundancy.

CONCEPT 11

Lobby "Super-District" Kiosk Banks

Interaction Point: Distributed Lobby Terminals | Primary Criteria Met: Anti-Linear Scale, Pre-Boarding
Separation

To eliminate information congestion, the lobby infrastructure features separate rows of structural
kiosks divided into ten color-coded "Super-Districts" of 1,000 floors each. Users approach the
dedicated physical kiosk row that corresponds to their macro-zone. The terminal splits choices into
sub-sectors using clear multi-tiered steps, eliminating information overload before the passenger
boards the car.

CONCEPT 12

E-Ink Passenger Armrest Status Modules

Interaction Point: Individual Cabin Passenger Seats | Primary Criteria Met: Friction Reduction, Temporal
Pacing

This interface addresses heavy passenger crowds inside high-capacity cars by moving status
tracking away from shared cabin walls. A low-glare, high-contrast E-ink display is built directly into
the armrest of every passenger seat. The module reads individual destination profiles via localized
RFID scanners, providing highly personalized journey data without requiring external devices or
obstructing crowd views.

CONCEPT 13

Captive-Portal Infrastructure Web Interface

Interaction Point: Localized Multi-Platform Mobile Browser | Primary Criteria Met: Device Independence,
Anti-Linear Scale

To circumvent app store barriers, entering the building's lobby triggers an automatic network
captive-portal prompt on any personal device. This cross-platform system features a highly
optimized text search bar for rapid destination indexing. It removes complex nesting, turning
unstructured descriptions into precise destination confirmations.

CONCEPT 14

Ceiling-Mounted Linear Progress Ribbon

Interaction Point: Cabin Overhead Structural Ceiling | Primary Criteria Met: Multi-Sensory Temporal
Pacing

An ultra-wide, curved LED matrix runs down the structural spine of the cabin ceiling, making it
visible to all standing and seated passengers. This display scales the 30,000-meter journey into a
single visual vector line. It shifts color dynamically from warm ochre to space midnight-blue,
providing clear feedback on travel progress and easing claustrophobia.

Predictive Floor-Gate Countdown Boards

Interaction Point: Structural Elevator Bank Gate Transoms | Primary Criteria Met: Friction Reduction,
Device Independence

Located above each elevator door in the building's lobby corridors, these high-density displays keep
traffic organized before passengers board. Instead of simple directional arrows, the panels display a
rolling timeline of scheduled stops for the next vehicle, letting passengers confirm their assignment
matches the car's route at a glance.

Projected Zonal Embarkation Guidance Lines

Interaction Point: Car Threshold Floor Surface | Primary Criteria Met: Friction Reduction, Temporal
Pacing

To streamline boarding inside high-capacity cars, an intelligent projection system maps directional
paths onto the floor at the cabin entrance. By scanning passenger destination data as they cross
the threshold, the system projects colored lines that guide long-distance riders to the back and
short-distance riders to the front, preventing exits from being blocked during intermediate stops.
