MECH2040 Tutorial 2

Chapter 1 – Concept of Stress

TA: YOU, Zhenyu

zyouac@[Link]
Normal stress

• See the next slide for how to get P when we have multiple loads.
• Do not drop the sign of normal force/stress
Q1
• Question: If cross sectional area is A, plot the normal stress against x.
• Steps:
1. Determine reaction
2. Cut the member at the section of interest
3. Draw FBD and find the force at the section
• Points outwards => Tension (+/T)
• Points inwards => Compression (-/C)
4. Divide by A
Q1 – Solution
Q2
Q2 – Solution
Shearing stress and F.S.
• Shear means cut. Force tangential to the surface being cut.
• Shearing stress τave = 𝑃/𝐴.
• Examples

• Factor of safety (F.S.) := ultimate stress/allowable stress

Q3
Multiple choice question:
• Tensile stress in the wood?
• Shearing stress in the wood?
• Shearing stress in the bolt?

(a) P/(c x 40mm) (e) 0.5P/(c x 40mm)

(b) P/(b x 40mm) (f) 0.5P/(b x 40mm)
(c) P/((b-d)x40mm) (g) 0.5P/(𝜋𝑑 2 /4)
(d) P/(𝜋𝑑2 /4)

(free at the bottom)

Q3 – Solution

Tensile stress in the wood: (b) & (c)

Q3 – Solution

Imagining how the wood would break

under shear

Extracting the block that bears

shear force

Shearing stress in the wood: (e)

Q3 – Solution

Shearing stress in the bolt: (g)

Q3 – Solution

Choose the minimum allowed value

Stress transformation

Btw sign of normal stress is not changed regardless of 𝜃.

Please notice how this 𝜃 is defined.

Sometimes the labelled angle in the
question is not this 𝜃.
more in later Chapter 6: “Transformation of stresses”
Q4
• The cross-sectional area A = 7.5 m^2
and P = 90kN.
• Determine the normal and shear
stresses acting on all faces of stress
elements located in the web of the
beam and oriented at 30 degrees.
Q4 – Solution

Normal stress 𝜎 = −9kPa

Shearing stress 𝜏 = 5.2kPa
Summary of tutorial 2
• Cut and draw FBD to find normal force/stress
• Shear stress
• Factor of safety
• Stress transformation of axial loading
