Digital Image Processing (DIP) Notes

1. Introduction to Digital Image Processing

Digital Image Processing (DIP) is the process of using a computer to improve, analyze, store,
and display digital images. It involves applying algorithms to images to enhance their quality or
extract useful information.

An image is represented as a collection of pixels. Each pixel has a value that represents
brightness or color.

Definition

Digital Image Processing is the use of computer algorithms to perform image processing on
digital images.

Applications

 Medical imaging
 Satellite imaging
 Face recognition
 Fingerprint identification
 Traffic monitoring
 Robotics
 Industrial inspection
 Security systems

2. Components of an Image Processing

System
An image processing system consists of the following components:

Image Acquisition

Capturing images using cameras or scanners.

Processing Unit

A computer or processor that performs image operations.

Storage

Stores digital images for future use.

Display Device

Displays processed images on monitors or screens.

Software

Programs used to process and analyze images.

3. Digital Image Fundamentals

A digital image is made up of tiny elements called pixels.

Pixel

The smallest unit of a digital image.

Resolution

Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image.

Higher resolution means:

 Better quality
 More details
 Larger file size

Image Size

Image size is measured in width × height.

Example:
1920 × 1080 pixels.

4. Types of Images
Binary Image
Contains only two colors:

 Black
 White

Each pixel has either 0 or 1.

Applications

 Document scanning
 Barcode recognition

Gray Scale Image

Contains different shades of gray.

Pixel values range from 0 to 255.

0 = Black

255 = White

Applications:

 Medical images
 X-ray images

Color Image
Uses Red, Green, and Blue (RGB).

Each color component ranges from 0–255.

Example:
RGB(255,0,0) = Red
5. Image Acquisition
Image acquisition is the first step in image processing.

Steps:

1. Capture image
2. Convert to digital format
3. Store image
4. Process image

Devices used:

 Digital Camera
 Webcam
 Scanner
 Satellite Camera
 MRI Scanner

6. Image Enhancement
Image enhancement improves image quality.

Objectives:

 Improve brightness
 Improve contrast
 Remove noise
 Sharpen details

Methods

Contrast Enhancement

Makes dark images clearer.

Brightness Adjustment

Increases or decreases brightness.

Histogram Equalization
Improves overall image contrast.

Image Sharpening

Highlights edges and fine details.

7. Image Restoration
Image restoration removes defects from images.

Common defects:

 Blur
 Noise
 Motion distortion

Techniques:

 Filtering
 Deconvolution
 Noise Reduction

Difference:

Enhancement improves appearance.

Restoration recovers the original image.

8. Image Filtering
Filtering modifies pixel values.

Types:

Low Pass Filter

Removes noise.

Produces smoother images.

High Pass Filter
Enhances edges.

Produces sharper images.

Median Filter
Removes salt-and-pepper noise.

Very useful for noisy images.

9. Image Segmentation
Segmentation divides an image into meaningful parts.

Purpose:

 Detect objects
 Count objects
 Identify regions

Methods:

 Thresholding
 Edge Detection
 Region Growing
 Clustering

Applications:

 Medical diagnosis
 Face detection
 Number plate recognition

10. Edge Detection

Edges represent object boundaries.
Common edge detection methods:

Sobel Operator

Detects horizontal and vertical edges.

Prewitt Operator

Simple edge detector.

Canny Edge Detector

Most accurate edge detection method.

Advantages:

 Low error
 Good localization
 Detects weak edges

11. Image Compression

Compression reduces image size.

Benefits:

 Saves storage
 Faster transmission
 Reduces bandwidth

Types

Lossless Compression

No data is lost.

Examples:

 PNG
 GIF

Lossy Compression
Some data is removed.

Examples:

 JPEG

12. Morphological Operations

Used mainly for binary images.

Operations:

Dilation

Adds pixels to object boundaries.

Erosion

Removes pixels from boundaries.

Opening

Removes small noise.

Closing

Fills small holes.

Applications:

 Shape analysis
 Object detection

13. Image Transformation

Transforms an image into another form.

Common transforms:

Fourier Transform
Used for frequency analysis.

Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)

Used in JPEG compression.

Wavelet Transform

Used in image compression and denoising.
