INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER

Here are the main characteristics of a computer:

Characteristics of a Computer
1. Speed

A computer can process data very quickly, in microseconds or nanoseconds.

It performs millions of instructions per second (MIPS).

2. Accuracy

Computers perform tasks accurately without mistakes, as long as the input and
instructions are correct.

3. Automation

Once given instructions (program), a computer can work automatically without further
human intervention.

4. Storage

Computers can store large amounts of data for future use.

Data can be retrieved quickly and easily when needed.

5. Versatility

A computer can perform different types of tasks, like calculations, document creation,
internet browsing, etc.

6. Multitasking

Computers can run multiple programs at the same time (e.g., listening to music while
browsing).

7. Diligence

Unlike humans, a computer does not get tired or bored. It can work for long hours
without losing efficiency.

8. Communication

Computers can communicate and share data with other computers through networks
like the internet.

9. Reliability

Computers are highly reliable and rarely fail if maintained properly

Definition of a Computer

A computer is an electronic device that receives data (input), processes it, stores it, and produces
output (information).

Categories of Computers
1. Supercomputers

 Most powerful and fastest computers.

 Used for complex calculations, simulations, and scientific research.
 Examples: Weather forecasting, space research, nuclear simulations.

2. Mainframe Computers

 Large and powerful systems used by big organizations.

 Handle hundreds or thousands of users at the same time.
 Used in banks, government departments, and airlines.

3. Minicomputers (also called Midrange computers)

 Smaller than mainframes but still powerful.

 Support multiple users, often used in medium-sized organizations.
 Not as common today, as many functions are now done by servers.

4. Microcomputers (Personal Computers - PCs)

 Most common type of computer.

 Designed for individual use.
 Includes desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

Main Components of a Computer

a. Hardware

The physical parts of a computer.

 Input devices: Keyboard, mouse, scanner

 Output devices: Monitor, printer, speakers
 Storage devices: Hard drive, USB flash drive
 Processing unit: Central Processing Unit (CPU)

b. Software

Programs and instructions used by a computer.

 System software: Operating systems like Windows, macOS, Linux

 Application software: MS Word, Excel, web browsers

Basic Functions of a Computer (IPO Cycle)

1. Input – Data entered into the computer.

2. Processing – The computer processes the input using the CPU.
3. Output – The result of processing is displayed.
4. Storage – Information is saved for future use.

Types of Computers
 Supercomputers – Extremely powerful, used in research.
 Mainframe computers – Used in large organizations.
 Personal Computers (PCs) – Desktops and laptops.
 Tablets and Smartphones – Mobile computing devices.

Categories of Computer Software
 System Software – Controls hardware (e.g., Windows, Linux).
 Application Software – For tasks (e.g., Word, Excel, Photoshop).
 Utility Software – Maintenance tasks (e.g., antivirus, disk cleanup).

Data vs Information

 Data: Raw facts and figures (e.g., 65, “John”)

 Information: Processed data with meaning (e.g., “John scored 65 marks”)

Common Computer Terminologies

Term Definition
Bit Smallest unit of data (0 or 1)
Byte 8 bits
File A collection of data or information
Folder A container used to organize files
Internet Global network of computers
Operating System Software that runs and manages hardware

Advantages of Using Computers

 Fast and accurate

 Store large amounts of data
 Automate tasks
 Easy communication (e.g., email, chat)

Disadvantages of Computers

 Risk of cybercrime
 Health issues (e.g., eye strain)
 High initial cost
 Dependency on technology

Care and Maintenance of Computers

 Keep clean and dust-free

 Install antivirus software
 Use a UPS to protect from power loss
 Avoid eating/drinking near the computer
