Q.4 A rectangular iron core is shown in Fig. It has a mean length of magnetic path of 100 cm,
cross section of 2 cm ×2 cm, relative permeability of 1400 and an air gap of 5 mm cut in the
core. The three coils carried by the core have number of turns Na= 335, N b= 600 and Nc= 600
and the respective currents are 1·6 A, 4 A and 3 A. The directions of the currents are as shown
in Fig. Find the flux in the air gap.
Q.5 A steel ring 30 cm mean diameter and of circular section 2 cm in diameter has an air gap 1
mm long. It is wound uniformly with 600 turns of wire carrying current of 2·5 A. Find (i) total
m.m.f., (ii) total reluctance and (iii) flux. Neglect magnetic leakage. The iron path takes 40% of
the total m.m.f.

capacitance. Find the relative heating effects of two current waves of equal peak value, the one
sinusoidal and the other rectangular in waveform.
Q.7 A resistance of 20 ohm, inductance of 0.2 H and capacitance of 150 μF are connected in
series and are fed by a 230 V, 50 Hz supply. Find X L, XC, Z, Y, p.f., active power and reactive
power.
Q.8 The emf per turn of a single phase 10 kVA, 2200/220V, 50 Hz transformer is 10V. Calculate
(i) the number of primary and secondary turns, (ii) the net cross-sectional area of core for a
maximum flux density of 1.5T.
Q.9 A 50 kVA, 3300/330 V, single phase transformer has iron loss and full load copper loss 400
W and 600 W respectively. Calculate the efficiency at half full load and 0.9 p.f. Also calculate
the load at which the efficiency is maximum.
Q.10 A 400 kVA, single phase transformer has a core loss of 2 kW and maximum efficiency at
0.8 p.f. occurs when the load is 240 kW. Calculate i) maximum efficiency at unity power factor
ii) the efficiency on full load at 0.71 power factor.
