Rule Name

The HIPAA Privacy Rule (part of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). [1]

Why It Is Important
This rule limits who can access a person's Protected Health Information (PHI) and dictates
what they can do with it. It is crucial because it gives patients control over their medical data,
establishes trust in healthcare providers, and ensures that sensitive diagnoses, prescriptions,
and health histories are not improperly used, sold, or exposed without consent. [1, 2, 3]

One Example
If a primary care doctor wants to share your medical history with a specialized surgeon, the
HIPAA Privacy Rule permits this transfer of information for treatment purposes without
requiring your explicit written consent.
