Definite integrals and their properties, application of the Fundamental Theorem of

Integral Calculus.

INTEGRATION

Let f(x) be defined continuous on a closed interval [a, b]. Let there exists a function F(x)
such that F(x) = f(x), a  x  b. Then, the function F(x) is called the antiderivative of
f(x). We observe that if F(x) is an antiderivative of f(x), then F(x) + c, where c is an
arbitrary constant, is also an antiderivative of f(x).
Indefinite integrals
If F(x) is an antiderivative of f(x) on [a, b], then for any arbitrary constant c, F(x) + c is
called the indefinite integral of f(x) on [a, b] and is written as

 f  x dx  F  x   c
In this case, we say that the f(x) is integral on [a, b]. We note that, not every function is
integrals. For example, the function f(x) defined as
0, x is rational
f x  
1, x is irrational
on [0, 1] does not have an antiderivative and hence is not integrable. We have the
following result.
Every function which is continuous on a closed and bounded interval is integrable.
We can evaluate an indefinite integral directly or by using the method of substitution, or
integration by parts etc.

Definite integrals
Let f(x) be a continuous function on [a, b]. Let
m  min f  x  and M  max f  x  .
a  x b a  xb

Divide the interval [a, b] into n subintervals [x1, x1], [x1, x2], ……, [xn1, xn], where x0 = a,
xn = b and a = x0 < x1 < x2 ….. < xn = b
y

S M
P Q

0 x0 x1 x2 xi1 i xi xn1 xn x

Let xi = xi  xi 1, i = 1, 2, …., n.

Let m i  min f  x  and M i  max f  x  , i  1, 2,...., n
x i1  x  x i x i1  x  x i

and i be any point in the interval [xi1, xi]. Corresponding to this partition, define
n
lower sum = ln(f) =  m x
i 1
i i

n
upper sum = u n  f    M i x i
i 1

n
and Sn  f    f  i  x i
i 1

Using these definitions, we obtain

ln(f)  Sn(f)  un(f)

The sum Sn(f) depends upon the way in which the interval [a, b] is subdivided and also
upon the choice of the points i inside the corresponding subintervals. Let n   such that
max(xi)  0. If

lim ln  f   lim Sn  f   lim u n  f 

n  n  n 

for any choice of the sequence of subdivision of the interval [a, b] and any i in the
interval [xi1, xi],then this limit is called the definite integral of f(x) over the interval [a, b]
b
and is written as  f  x dx .
a
Remarks
a) For integrability, the condition that f(x) is continuous on [a, b] can be relaxed. The
function f(x) may only be piecewise continuous on [a, b].

b) The choice of points x0, x1, …., xn is arbitrary. One may choose such that they form an
arithmetic progression or a geometric progression.

c) If f(x) is not defined at x = a and x = b and defined in the open interval (a, b), then
b

 f  x  dx
a
can be evaluated.

b
d) If  f  x  dx  0 ,
a
then the equation f(x) = 0 has at least one root lying in (a, b),

provided f is a continuous function in (a, b).

b
e) In  f  x  dx , the function f needs to be welldefined and continuous in the closed
a

interval [a, b]. For instance, the consideration of the definite integral dx
2

is erroneous since the function f expressed by f  x   x  x 2  1

1/ 2
is not defined in the
portion  1 < x < 1 on the closed interval [2, 3].

First fundamental theorem of integrals

Let f(x) be a continuous function on a closed and bounded interval [a, b]. Then the
function
x
F  x    f  t  dt
a

is continuous on [a, b], differentiable in (a, b) and F  x   f  x 

Second fundamental theorem of integrals, NewtonLeibniz formula

Let F(x) be an antiderivative of a continuous function f(x) on [a, b]. Then,
b

 f  x   F  b  F a 
a

Remarks
This formula can be used only, if the function f(x) is continuous at all points in the interval
[a, b].

THE INTEGRAL OF A FUNCTION DISCONTINUOUS OR UNDEFINED AT END POINT

Let us suppose a function y = f(x), defined and continuous in a  x < b and either not
defined or discontinuous at x = b. Thus if

 f  x dx    x 
b
then the integral  f  x dx is defined as follows :
a

 f  x dx 
a
lim   x     a 
x b  h

Similarly if f(x) is undefined or discontinuous at x = a then

CHANGING THE VARIABLE IN A DEFINITE INTEGRAL
If a function x = (t) satisfies the following conditions
a) (t) is a continuous singlevalued function defined in [, ] and has in this interval a
continuous derivative (t).
b) With t varying on [, ] the values of the function x = (t) do not leave the limits
of [a, b].
c) () = a and () = b, then the formula for chaining the variable (or substitution) in the
definite integral is valid for any function f(x) which is continuous on the interval [a, b]
b 

 f  x dx   f   t    t dt

a 

Instead of the substitution x = (t) the inverse substitution t = (x) is frequently used.
In this case the limits of integration  and  are determined directly from the equalities
 = (a) and  = (b). In practice, the substitution is usually performed with the aid of
monotonic, continuously differentiable functions. The change in the limits of
integration is conveniently expressed in the tabular form
x t

b 

DEFINITE INTEGRAL AS THE LIMIT OF A SUM
y

y = f(x)

0 a a+h a+2h a+3h a+(n1)h a+nh=b x

We can express definite integral as a limit of the sum of a certain number of terms. Let
f (x) be a continuous function on the closed interval [a, b]. Divide a-b interval into n equal
parts such that width of each part is h.

ba
i.e., nh = b  a  h 
n

Let Sn denotes the area of these n rectangles.

Then, Sn = hf(a) + hf(a + h) + hf(a + 2h) + … + hf(a + (n  1)h)

Clearly, Sn is area very close of the area of the region bounded by curve y = f(x), xaxis
and the ordinates x = a, x = b.

b
Hence  f  x dx  lim Sn
n 
a h 0

The definite integral of function f(x) in the interval [a, b] can be defined as

 f  x dx  lim h f  a  h   f  a  2h   ...  f  a  nh  where nh = b  a.

With the help of this formula, we can evaluate some simple definite integrals. The process
of finding definite integrals with the use of above formula is known as definite integral as
a limit of a sum or definite integral by first principle.
