Bringing Anansi to Life: Performance, Analysis, and Interpretation
Task Overview
Working as a group, you will demonstrate your understanding of Anansi through a recorded video that combines dramatic
performance, literary analysis, and critical explanation.
Your group will select three significant scenes from the play that reveal important themes, conflicts, character
development, or social issues. You will perform these scenes and then analyze and explain their significance.
The video should demonstrate not only your acting skills but also your ability to critically interpret the play.
Assignment Requirements
Part 1: Dramatic Performance (10 marks)
Select and perform three key scenes from the play.
Your performance should demonstrate:
Accurate portrayal of characters
Appropriate use of voice, tone, and expression
Effective movement and staging
Understanding of the events and emotions in the scenes
Suggested scenes may include:
Anansi's interactions with Tiger
Scenes that reveal Anansi's trickery
Scenes involving conflict and power
The climax and resolution
Part 2: Literary Analysis and Explanation (20 marks)
After each scene:
Students must pause the performance and explain:
A. Scene Analysis
What happens in the scene?
Why is the scene important?
What conflict is being presented?
B. Character Analysis
What does the scene reveal about the character(s)?
How do the characters change or develop?
C. Theme Analysis
Identify and explain at least one theme such as:
Deception and trickery
Survival
Power and authority
Intelligence versus strength
Justice and consequences
D. Evidence from the Play
Use quotations or specific references from the scene to support explanations.
Part 3: Personal Reflection and Application (10 marks)
At the end of the video, each student must contribute briefly (30–60 seconds).
Students should answer one of the following:
What lesson does the play teach?
Is Anansi a hero, villain, or both? Explain.
How is the play relevant to Caribbean society today?
What would you have done differently if you were one of the characters?
What message does the playwright communicate through Anansi?

Video should be clear and audible.
Costumes and props are encouraged but not required.
