A Computer System

Teacher: Mr. Benjamin

Group Members: Michelle, Teka, Harrison, Babalola, and Henry

1. Michelle – Components of a Computer System

A computer system is an organized collection of parts that work together to accept data,
process it, store it, and produce information. The three main components of a computer
system are hardware, software, and peopleware.

Hardware refers to all the physical parts of a computer that you can touch and see. These
include the monitor, keyboard, mouse, system unit, and printer. The system unit houses
important components such as the motherboard, CPU, memory, and storage devices.
Hardware cannot function on its own; it needs instructions to operate.

Software provides those instructions. It is the collection of programs that tell the hardware
what to do and how to do it. There are two main types of software: system software and
application software. System software, like Windows or macOS, manages the hardware and
allows other programs to run. Application software, such as Microsoft Word or Excel, helps
users perform specific tasks.

The third component, peopleware, includes the users and operators of the computer.
Without people, the computer cannot be used effectively. People design, program, operate,
and maintain the system. All three components — hardware, software, and peopleware —
must work together for the computer system to function efficiently.

2. Teka – Input and Output Devices

Input and output devices are essential tools that allow communication between the user
and the computer. Input devices are used to enter data or instructions into the computer.
Examples include the keyboard, mouse, scanner, and microphone. The keyboard allows
users to type text, the mouse helps to point and click on commands, and the scanner
captures images or documents for digital use. Some modern computers also use
touchscreens as both input and output devices.

Output devices, on the other hand, are used to display or produce the results of the
computer’s processing. The most common output device is the monitor, which shows text,
pictures, and videos. Printers produce hard copies of documents, while speakers and
headphones produce sound.

Input and output devices make interaction with the computer possible. Without them, users
could neither send instructions to the computer nor see the results of their work. They
serve as the bridge between humans and machines, helping to make computing easy and
effective.

3. Harrison – The Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the part of the computer that performs most of the
processing. It is often called the brain of the computer because it interprets and carries out
instructions. The CPU consists of three main parts: the Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU), the
Control Unit (CU), and the Memory Unit.

The ALU handles all the mathematical calculations and logical comparisons. For example,
when performing addition, subtraction, or checking if one number is greater than another,
the ALU does the work. The Control Unit acts as the manager — it directs the operation of
the entire system, ensuring that instructions are carried out in the correct order. The
Memory Unit stores data and instructions temporarily while the CPU works on them.

The CPU operates at very high speed and is measured in hertz (Hz). Modern processors can
perform millions or even billions of operations per second. Without the CPU, a computer
would not be able to perform any task because it coordinates and controls every activity
that takes place inside the system.

4. Babalola – Types and Classification of Computer Systems

Computer systems come in different types and sizes, depending on their power, purpose,
and capability. One way to classify computers is by their size. The smallest are
microcomputers, also known as personal computers (PCs), which are commonly used at
home, in schools, and offices. Minicomputers are medium-sized and can support several
users at once, often used in medium organizations. Mainframe computers are large and
powerful systems that can handle vast amounts of data and serve hundreds of users
simultaneously. The largest and fastest are supercomputers, used for scientific research,
weather forecasting, and space exploration.

Another way to classify computers is by purpose. General-purpose computers can perform

many different tasks, such as writing, gaming, and designing. Special-purpose computers
are built to perform one particular function, like controlling machines in factories or
operating an ATM.

Understanding the types and classifications of computer systems helps us choose the right
system for different needs. Whether it’s a smartphone, a laptop, or a supercomputer, every
computer is designed to meet specific purposes and performance requirements.

5. Henry – Functions and Uses of a Computer System

A computer system performs four basic functions: input, processing, storage, and output.
During input, data is entered into the system using input devices such as a keyboard or
mouse. The CPU then processes the data according to the given instructions, turning it into
meaningful information. After processing, the information can be stored for future use or
displayed as output through devices like monitors or printers.

Computers have become an important part of everyday life. In education, they help students
learn, research, and complete assignments. In business, they are used for record-keeping,
online transactions, and communication. In healthcare, computers store patient information
and help in diagnosing diseases. In banks, they handle financial transactions quickly and
accurately.

Computers offer many advantages — they are fast, reliable, and efficient. They can handle
large amounts of data and perform complex tasks in seconds. However, they also have
limitations, such as dependence on electricity and the possibility of data loss through
viruses or system failure. Despite these challenges, computers remain one of the greatest
tools ever invented by humans, transforming how we live, learn, and work.
