THIRD TERM PRACTICAL EXAMINATION FOR 2022/2023
SESSION
SUBJECT: PHYSICS CLASS: SS2 DURATION: 2 HOURS

NAME____________________________________________________________

ADMISSION NO___________________________________________________

INSTRUCTION: Choose any two-practical question of your choice out of

three and performed as stated.
1. You are provided with a rectangular glass block, optical pins, drawing board,
drawing sheet protractor and a ruler

D Q Z C
P3
P4
[Link] the outline ABCD of the glass block on the sheet of paper as shown in
the diagram
ii. Remove the block and mark a position L such that AL is about one -
quarter of AB.
iii. Draw the normal KLQ.
iv. Draw a line ML making an angle i =20° with the line KL
v. Find two pins P1 and P2
vi. Replace the block and fix the other two pins P3 and P4 such that the
pins appear to be in a straight line with the image of the P1 and P2
when viewed through the side DC of the prism
vii. Remove the block and join the point P4 and P3 producing the line to
meet DC at Z and LQ at N
viii. Join LZ, measure and record the length of LZ and NZ
ix. Repeat the procedure with i= 30°,40°,50°,60° respectively, in each case
measure and record the corresponding length of LZ and NZ
x. Tabulate your readings
xi. Plot the graph of NZ against LZ, Starting both axes from the origin
xii. Calculate the slope S of the graph, Evaluate ղ=1/S
xiii. State two precautions taken, attach your tracings to the booklet.
xiv. Sketch a diagram to show the path of a ray through a glass block when
the angle of incidence i =90°
xv. Calculate the critical angle of a medium of refractive index 1.6 when
light passes from the medium to air.

2. You are provided with a triangular glass prism, optical pins, drawing
board, drawing sheet protractor and ruler

A d
Z
V
l e
Q R
Y
P S
N B C
[Link] the prism provided on a tracing paper and draw its outline ABC
ii. Remove the prism and, measure and record the value of angle A
iii. Draw a normal to the line AB at Y, also draw another line NY to the
normal such that i =45°
iv. Fix two pins at P and Q, replace the prism and fix two other pins at R
and S, such that the pins appear to be in a straight line with the image
of the pins at P and Q when viewed from the side of AC of the prism
v. Remove the prism, join R and S producing it to meet line NY at. Draw
the normal VX
vi. Measure and record the angle of emergence e and the angle of
deviation d
vii. Repeat the procedure with i =50°,55°,60°, 65° in each case measure
and record the corresponding values of e and d tabulate your readings
viii. Plot the graph of the d on the vertical axis and e on the horizontal
starting both axis from the origin
ix. From your graph obtain the minimum deviation d m and angle of
emergence em
x. Calculate the refractive index of the materials using this formula ղ=
Sin1/2(A+D)/Sin1/2 A
xi. State two precautions you took to ensure accuracy
xii. Explain what is meant by the statement the refractive index of glass is
1.5
xiii. State two conditions that must be fulfilled for total internal reflection to
take place.

3. You are provided with a ray box, lens holder, converging lens, metre rule

Illuminated object lens screen

Ray box

U V

i. Arrange the illuminated object, the converging lens and the screen as
shown in the diagram above
ii. Measure and record the height Ho of the illuminated object
iii. Place the converging lens at a distance U of 18cm from the object and
adjust the position of the screen until a sharp image of the illuminated
object is obtain on the screen
iv. Read and record the height H1 of the image. Also measure and record
the distance V between the screen and the lens
v. Evaluate and record H1/H0
vi. Repeat the procedure by using U = 26,28,30,32cm. Tabulate your
readings and evaluate H1/H0 each case
vii. Plot the graph with H1/H0 on the vertical axis and V on the horizontal
viii. Find the slope of your graph
ix. State two precaution you took to ensure accurate reading in the
experiment
x. An object 4cm high is placed 10cm away from a converging lens of
focal length15cm. What is the size of the object?
