Orient sheets before lifting
+ Determine from which side of the roof the sheet laying
should begin. The most effective direction of laying is
from the down-wind side against the direction of the
heaviest prevailing rains. (See Figure 1: Direction of
root Laying)
+ Sheets should be stacked in the correct oriontation on
the ground to avold having to turn them around after
they have been lifted onto the roof. The female rb of
the sheets should face the side of the roof from where
laying is to start.
'* Once on the roof, the sheet stacks should be laid over
rigid supports and not en purlin mi-spans.
Installation Procedure
‘Step 1. Install the fist row of connectors, one on each putin, stating withthe
topmost and bottommost connectors. Position the clips so that their engaging
log face outwards from the centre of the root. String @ straight line between
the first two connectors and postion the in-between clips along the Ine. After
the frst row of connectors has been socured, the second and subsequent
rows can be installed.
Caution: It ie important that the connectors are fixed squarely to the roof
shoots
‘Step 2, Position the frst sheet over the fist row of connectors, placing the
female rib outwards from the centr ofthe roof. Eneure the correct distance of
the gutter overang (Table 9: Maximum and Recommended Support
Spacing). Securely lock the sheet onto the tirstrow and second-row.
connectors by pressing down on the ribs with your foot, or with a rubber
hammer (Figures 81-82).

Step 3. Position the second sheet over the connectors, aligning the
‘overhanging end with the first. Press down on the ribs using foot pressure or
a rubber hammer to lock the sheet onto the connectors. A ‘click’ should be
audible when the fib is pressed down, which indicates proper locking,
Continue fixing subsequent sheets in the same manner unil the opposite
edge ofthe root is reached (Figures C1 — 08).
‘Step 4. I a ridge cap is required, the ridge ends of the roof sheets should be
fumed up to prevent water from flowing upwards and into the building. In
addition, a water block sirip should be installed across the troughs and sealed
‘on both sides with PE tape. The ridge cap is then positioned and secured with
screws through the rp crests (Figures D1 ~ D6),

Average heat transfer 1.8 wat per fastener
Aniotunrnudeudssinn 1.8 Sadangwisia
In warm climates there is considerable cost in keeping
the inside buildings cool. All or most of the unwanted
heat flows from outside into the cooler interior of the
building. its this heat we consider here. Many modern
buildings are air-conditioned and the cost of air-
conditioning is an important consideration when
determining the cost of runing a business.
By far the largest amount of heat comes through
the roof-up to 50% of the total.
This is because the roof has both a large area and is,
much hotter thai other building elements. Thus, @
property designed roof insulation system will be the
most costeffective way of reducing total air-
conditioning costs. The amount of heat transferred
from the outside through a roofing to the interior of a
building is determined by the heat in the outside skin,
the thermal resistance offered by the roof system
itself, and the rate of heat transfer to the interior.
Heat transfer to roof cladding
‘The surface temperature of roof cladding rises as a
result of absorbing solar radiation. Heat is lost, and
the temperature stabilised,
+ convection cooling from the outside air
* reflection and radiative cooling from the cladding
surface; and
+ heat flowing to the inside of the building.
‘The amount of solar radiation and radiative cooling
can be readily calculated if the infra-red emittance
‘and solar reflectance are known but note that these
values change substantially over the life of the roof as
dit accumulates on surfaces of the cladding.
Convective cooling is more difficult to determine
precisely. We therefore rely heavily on temperature
measurements on real roofs to help us understand
the actual temperature rise. The coolest roof are
those clad with unpainted ZINCALUME® roofing, or
prepainted with very light Clean COLORBOND®
colours. Even so our measurements show that the
temperature reached by these good-performing roofs +
can easily reach 80° C.
* Type of THERMOSAVE® are 50 mm. thickness and 100 mm. thickness.

Step 3. Lay insulation sheets along the length of the purlins, ensuring close
‘contact between the sheets and the THERMOSAVE® blocks. No gaps should
be allowed between the insulators in order to establish effective thermal
Insulation (Figs C1, C2).
Note. The insulation sheets may be laid across the puns (parallel to the
roof sheets) With this method, however, slots must be cut away from the
sheets directly above the purlins to allow for placement of the
THERMOSAVE® blocks.
‘Step 4. All insulation blankets having been laid, the roof sheets can now be
fixed. Position the first sheet with its female rib facing away from the centre,
of the roof and its end extending a correct distance into the gutter (See
table 3 for correct overhang limits). Engage the female rib and the centre,
rib with the first and second rows of connectors, using foot pressure or light
pounding with a rubber hammer until the sheets firmly locks in place.
‘Secure subsequent sheets in the same manner (Figs D1, 02).
Step 5. If the roof structure requires a ridge cap, the upper ends of sheet
troughs must be turned up to prevent water from flowing upwards. A top
closure is used to close the gap between the sheet ends. Both sides of the
closure base are sealed along the entire length with PE tape. Aridge cap is,
then positioned over the top closure and fixed with screws through each
crest of the roof sheets. (Figs E1-E6.)SisieUsuaen suit swan se)

20A more accurate calculation
of heat flow through a roof
Traditional calculations
It is very straightforward to determine the heat flow
through an insulated roof If the connections between
the cladcing and underlying structure are ignored. The
following formula can be used. Q= U"A* (Ti- To)
WHERE:
Q= heat flow
U= thermal transmittance
‘A= surface area
T= inside temperature
To = outside temperature
Utsthe inverse ofthe thermal resistance andis determined
by adding the thermal resistance of all the elements,
that make up the roof system (see the adjacent Heat
flow calouiations table). While the figures in the table
can be used as a guide, they are simplistic and do not
take into account increased heat flow through the fixing
system, The fixing system, whether plerced-fiwed or
concealed-fixed, acts as a direct conductor of heat
‘rom the cladding to the internal supporting roof frame.
Afurther compllcdtion occurs because the insulation is
not full thickness over the total areadt is usually
squashed under connections, and between the cladding
pans and the purlins. Our analysis takes this into
account wih significant improvements being delivered.
More realistic calculat
ns
Caloulating the actual heat transfer through a real root
is very complex and requires a 3D finite element
model to achieve an accurate result. We have used
‘an area-weighted model to help design our system. It
shows that a typical roof using old-ganeration clip or
connector systems, with 100mm glasswoo! insulation,
21
will experience up to 15% of the heat gain, which
comes through the fastening system. itis important to
take this into account when designing the system
From theoretical models, and from mechanical
design, LYSAGHT ULTIMA HI-RIB®, HI-TEN offers
superior performance.
Thermal and mechanical designs
Heavy steel brackets with large contact areas and
solid bolted connections guarantee high transfer of
heat to the purlins and eventually inside the building,
LYSAGHT ULTIMA HI-RIB®, HI-TEN offers you @
sophisticated, high-performance solution.

22Enhanced roof drainage
with LYSAGHT ULTIMA HI-RIB’ HI-TEN
The proflle (cross-sectional shape) of metal roof cladding
has a very significant inluence on the ability of a roof to
keep the inside of the building dry. This is even more
important where the building is located in an area of high
rainfall
LYSAGHT ULTIMA HL-RIB® HI-TEN is particularly
suitable for roofing in Asia. These products combine high
rain carrying capacity and superior side-lap seals,
Watertight seams
Wind driven rain can test out the seams at the side-aps
of roof cladding. The snep seams used on our
LYSAGHT ULTIMA HI-RIB® HI-TEN ere inherently
watertight, and this is very important because hand-
crimped seams are not.
To confirm this we have tested seams with our specially
dovoloped rain machine that simulates rain being wind-
blown at the side-laps in the root cladcing, at speeds of
Up to 180 km per hour.
Roof profile capacity
[Aprofiled roots lke a series of open channels that carry
rainwater down the roof to a guttering system. The
behaviour of fluid flow in open channels is well known
having been the subject of a lot of research, by many
people.
Sound metal root cladding remains watertight until the
pans at the two sides of a sheot fil up to the side-lap.
The laps have to provide a watertight joint, but at the
‘same time demand careful detail design of ant
capillary features to stop water being ‘wicked up into
the joint. Good anti-capilary design helps with
waterighiness and eliminates the retention of molsture
that could cause the corto
prematurely.
nprotection to fall
23
Factors that influence the capacity of a roof are the
avaliable cross-sectional area of the profile; the width of
the water surtace flow; the length of the roofing down the
slope; the roof pitch, the rainfall intensity and the wind,
For a roof cladding to periorm to specification, itis most
important that the guttering and drainage system is able
to carry away the design volume of water.
Length of roofs
In designing LYSAGHT ULTIMA HI-RIB® H-TEN we
draw on the technical puatcations of Australia’s well
respected Commonwealth Scientific and Industiat
Research Organization (CSIRO). They, in turn, have
considered oversees research,
‘The rain-carrying capecity of the open-channel pans in
roof claddings Is controlled by a number of parameters
that are combined in the CSIRO length formula, For
LYSAGHT ULTIMA HERIB® HI-TEN the maximum
length down the slope is derived from:

L = maximum length of roof sheeting measured down

In considering the area of a root and the root length, iis
important to take into account penetrations through the
‘oof, Penetrations will generally not ator the area of the
roof catching rain; however, where they bfock the pane of
the roof cladding, they can significantly inorease the
\ater flow in adjacent pans and thus overtoad them,
In tho dlagram the pans are numbered 1 to 6, it can be
seen in the worked example that pan 6 (the worst case)
carries a lot more water than pan 1
