4. For a 3×3 image, determine total number of pixels.
Pixels = Rows × Columns= 3 × 3= 9 pixels
5. Explain pixel connectivity and neighborhood relationships
Pixels in an image are related to their neighbors through connectivity.
Types of connectivity:
4-connectivity – Neighbor pixels are located above, below, left, and right.
8-connectivity – Includes diagonal neighbors also.
Diagonal connectivity – Only diagonal neighbors are considered.
Unit-II
1. Apply 3×3 averaging filter to find center pixel value.

Sorted values=10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90
Median = center value=50
4. What is spatial filtering?
Spatial filtering modifies pixel values using a mask (kernel) applied to a neighborhood.
5. Explain histogram equalization.
Histogram equalization improves contrast by redistributing gray levels uniformly.
Calculate histogram
Compute cumulative distribution
Map old intensities to new intensities
Unit-III
1. Explain the image degradation model.
The degradation model is:
g(x,y) = h(x,y) * f(x,y) + η(x,y)
Where:
g(x,y) – degraded image
f(x,y) – original image
h(x,y) – degradation function
η(x,y) – noise
2. Explain inverse filtering.
Inverse filtering restores an image by reversing the degradation function in the frequency
domain. It removes blur by dividing by the degradation function.
3. Explain least mean square (LMS) restoration.
LMS restoration minimizes the mean square error between original and restored images.
Unit-IV
1. Explain edge detection.
Edge detection identifies boundaries of objects in images. Edges correspond to large
intensity changes.
2. Explain thresholding segmentation.
Thresholding separates objects from background using intensity values.
Rule: If pixel ≥ threshold → object
Else → background
3. Define image segmentation
Image segmentation divides an image into meaningful regions or objects.
Unit-V
1. Define Image Compression. Why is it necessary?
Image compression is the process of reducing the amount of data required to represent an
image without significantly affecting its quality.
Need for compression
Reduces storage requirements
Reduces transmission bandwidth
Faster image processing
2. Explain different types of redundancy in images.
Image compression removes different types of redundancies.
Coding Redundancy: Occurs when inefficient coding is used to represent pixel values.
Interpixel Redundancy:Neighboring pixels are highly correlated.
Psychovisual Redundancy:Some information is less important to human vision.
3. Compression ratio measures efficiency of compression.
Compression Ratio = Original Size / Compressed Size
Example: Original size = 100 KB
Compressed size = 25 KB
Compression ratio = 4 : 1

1. What is an image in digital image processing?
A digital image is a two-dimensional function f(x,y) where x and y represent spatial
coordinates and f(x,y) represents intensity or gray [Link] x, y, and intensity values are
discrete, the image is called a digital image.
2. What is a pixel?
A pixel (picture element) is the smallest unit of a digital image that represents intensity
information.
3. What is histogram of an image?
Histogram represents the distribution of gray levels in an image.
It shows Frequency of each intensity value and Contrast characteristics of an image.
4. What is image filtering?
Filtering is the process of modifying pixel values using a mask (kernel).
Types: Low-pass filters (smoothing), High-pass filters (edge detection)
5. What is image compression?
Image compression reduces the amount of data required to store or transmit an image.
Types: Lossless compression – No information loss, Lossy compression – Some information
loss
6. What is a case study example in image processing?
Example: Medical tumor detection
Steps:
Acquire MRI image
Apply noise removal filter
Enhance contrast
Segment tumor region
Extract tumor features
This helps doctors detect abnormalities.
