ENGR 103 – User-Centered Design (UCD) Project
Introduction
The introduction is the beginning of the report and clearly presents the project. It introduces the
topic and explains how they are relevant to the engineering field and how they affect society.
This section focuses on the need to take a user-centered design approach where the needs,
experiences and constraints of the users are considered during the development of the
engineering solutions. It also provides an outline of the report, providing a map for the reader
through the study and setting the tone for the remainder of the report.
Background
The background area gives a detailed context of the selected topic. Describes the origin and
evolution of the problem and its current place in society. Historical or technical context, or real-
world examples, may be included in this section to aid the reader in understanding the problem
more completely. It also relates the problem to engineering practice and demonstrates how
engineering solutions have been used in the past and how they have affected people's lives. A
good background provides the reader with sufficient background material to understand the
importance of the problem.
Problem Statement
The problem statement is clear and precise in describing the specific problem that the project is
to address. It identifies the gap/limitation in the current solution and why it is significant to
resolve the problem. This section will be more detailed about the user community impacted by
the problem and the issues encountered. A good problem statement is concise and yet it has a lot
of impact and sets the course for the project and gives it direction and purpose for research.
Objective
This section describes the key objectives the project aims to achieve. The objectives give
structure to the research and aid in assessing research success. The goals can be to become
familiar with the problem in detail, analyze existing engineering solutions, identify weak points
and make recommendations for improvements. Clear and unambiguous aims are set at the outset
to guide the study through and keep it focused and organized.
Literature Review
The literature review provides a thorough summary of all the research, studies and engineering
solutions focused on the topic that has been performed. It includes reading literature, articles,
case studies and other trustworthy sources to gain an insight into what has already been achieved
in this field. This section is designed to identify trends, strengths and limitations of past work. It
also identifies the areas of knowledge gaps and/or where existing solutions are not effective,
thereby justifying the need of the present study. A thorough literature review lends credibility and
depth to the project.
Methodology
The methodology of this project is designed to give clear, systematic and reliable analysis of the
selected problem following the user-centred design methodology. The study adopted a mainly
qualitative approach which is more useful for understanding the user needs, experiences and the
social effect of engineering solutions, rather than numerical data alone. A detailed literature
review of academic papers and research papers, and credible online sources, was conducted,
alongside case study analysis of existing engineering solutions to explore the performance of
these solutions in practice. Furthermore, user ways of thinking were taken into consideration and
issues, needs, and constraints shared by various groups were identified. The gathered data was
then analyzed using a comparative and critical evaluation process, where different solutions were
evaluated from the aspects of efficiency, usability, accessibility, affordability, safety and overall
effectiveness. User-Centered Design elements were considered and given special care so that the
solutions were not only technically evaluated but also practically tested to assess their ability to
respond to human needs. For consistency and objectivity, certain criteria were applied, such as
functionality, ease of use, cost, safety, and social impact. The study was based on various
resources including academic databases, engineering reports and case studies to ensure the
credibility of information. There were some constraints, however, including the fact that the data
was secondary and that the information was not readily available for direct feedback from the
user. Despite these limitations, an attempt was made to apply current and valid data to produce a
valid analysis. In general, this approach incorporates a systematic research process, critical
analysis, and a keen awareness of the human element to yield valuable and dependable insights
into the issue.
Analysis and Discussion
This project includes an analysis and discussion component which involves critically reviewing
gathered information and analyzing the effectiveness of the existing engineering solutions for
this problem from both the technical and user perspective. The study of literature and case
studies has revealed that many of the existing solutions are built around high technical
performance and can be very efficient and functional. But from the user-centered design
viewpoint, there are a few shortcomings that can be seen in these solutions, especially regarding
accessibility and usability as well as adaptation to various groups of users. The detailed study of
available solutions shows that some designs may work sufficiently well when under ideal
conditions but have limitations when used under actual user conditions. For example, some
solutions might be technically successful and affordable but not be very user-friendly because
they require skills that the non-expert user does not have. For another similar example, some
systems are designed without considering physical or environmental constraints, and therefore
are not usable for people with varying capabilities or who live in a resource-limited environment.
This is a typical problem in engineering design, where user needs are ignored to optimize the
system technically. Moreover, the analysis reveals that there are still many engineering solutions
where affordability is a major problem. Technology has advanced to provide greater performance
as well, but these technologies are not likely to be available to a large proportion of the
population due to cost. This leaves a divide between innovations and real-world application,
especially within developing countries or low-income areas. Additionally, the security and
reliability of the solution are important elements to consider that can impact user trust, as weak
security measures and reliability can diminish the impact of a solution, regardless of how
technically robust and successful it is. Social and ethical considerations are highlighted, with a
focus on inclusive and equitable engineering solutions. The results indicate that approaches that
do not consider the needs of diverse user groups can exclude some groups of users without their
awareness, which in turn can result in unequal benefits. This emphasizes the need to apply user-
centered design in the engineering process, thus making the solutions not only technically
competent but socially responsible as well. In conclusion, the talk emphasizes that it is not
possible to determine the success of an engineering solution by measuring technical performance
alone. Rather, a balanced approach is necessary taking into account the functional, the usable, the
cost, the safety and the social aspects. This analysis will enable us to understand where solutions
are effective and where they fall short, which will help us identify ways to improve them, and
guide the design of more inclusive, efficient and user-friendly engineering solutions.
Social Justice and Human Factors Considerations
The emphasis of this section is on the socio-human aspects of the engineering solution. It looks
at the possibility of access, affordability, and usability of the solution by various groups,
including those potentially disadvantaged. It also considers moral aspects and equity of the
solution. Human factors (safety, comfort, ease of use and user experience) are covered in detail.
This section emphasizes the need to think about developing solutions that can be beneficial to the
entire society and inclusive.
Limitations
The limitations section recognizes the restrictions encountered in the project. This can be in the
form of data limitations, time constraints, assumptions in the analysis or access limitations to
some resources. It is important to discuss limitations to demonstrate honesty with and critical
awareness of the boundaries of the study. It also will assist the reader to determine how far the
results can be generalized or applied.
Conclusion
Overall, the project underscores the significance of adopting user-centred design principles in
engineering to develop solutions that are not only technically successful but also socially
responsible and convenient. Detailed research and analysis show that many engineering solutions
already exist that have good functionality and efficiency but do not work well for actual users.
Usability, affordability, safety, and inclusivity are important factors in design and can restrict the
success of a design in its application. The results of this research highlight not only the technical
aspects of engineering but also the need to consider human requirements. If a solution is too
difficult to use or too expensive, it cannot be a success of the highest order. So, it is important to
incorporate human factors and social aspects throughout the design process to create meaningful
and impactful solutions. The project also illustrates the importance of critical thinking and
understanding the advantages and disadvantages of current systems, which will enable
recommendations for improvements to be made. The study validates the notion that engineering
design is a process that must be balanced, incorporating technical expertise and an understanding
of the user. Inclusivity, accessibility, and real-world usability are the key elements of designing
solutions that meaningfully impact society and foster a more equitable and sustainable future,
and by focusing on these factors, engineers can achieve these goals.
Recommendations
This section offers practical and realistic suggestions for improving existing solutions. The
recommendations are based on the analysis and findings of the study and focus on making
engineering designs more user-friendly, efficient and socially inclusive. It may also suggest areas
for further improvement or innovation, helping guide further research and development.
