Research Process – Steps in Research Methodology

The research process is a systematic sequence of steps followed to identify a problem, collect
information, analyze data, and arrive at conclusions.

1. Identification of the Research Problem

The first step is to identify and define the problem or topic to be studied. The research problem
should be clear, specific, and meaningful.

Example:
Studying the impact of online learning on student performance.

2. Review of Literature

Researchers collect and study existing books, journals, articles, and previous research related to
the topic.

Purpose:

 Understand previous findings

 Identify research gaps
 Build theoretical background

3. Formulation of Objectives and Hypothesis

Research objectives explain what the study aims to achieve.

A hypothesis is a tentative statement that predicts a relationship between variables.

Example:

 Objective: To study student satisfaction with online classes.

 Hypothesis: Online learning improves academic performance.

4. Research Design

Research design is the overall plan for conducting the study.

Types:
 Exploratory Research
 Descriptive Research
 Experimental Research

5. Sampling Design

Researchers decide:

 Target population
 Sample size
 Sampling technique

Methods:

 Random Sampling
 Stratified Sampling
 Cluster Sampling

6. Data Collection

Data is gathered using suitable methods.

Primary Data:

 Surveys
 Interviews
 Observation
 Questionnaires

Secondary Data:

 Books
 Research papers
 Websites
 Reports

7. Data Processing and Analysis

Collected data is organized and analyzed using statistical and mathematical tools.
Activities include:

 Classification
 Tabulation
 Statistical analysis
 Interpretation

Tools may include:

 Mean
 Correlation
 Regression
 Hypothesis testing

8. Interpretation of Results

The analyzed data is interpreted to explain findings and answer research questions.

9. Drawing Conclusions and Recommendations

Researchers summarize findings and provide suggestions or recommendations.

10. Report Writing and Presentation

The final research report is prepared and presented.

Typical sections:

 Title Page
 Abstract
 Introduction
 Methodology
 Analysis
 Findings
 Conclusion
