Needs vs wants – Smart Spending Habits

Introduction
Financial education, or financial literacy, is very important in our daily life. If we do not know how to
manage spending and saving properly, our family may face problems in taking care of everyone and
staying safe. Our progress and growth in life can even stop. That is why financial knowledge is very
necessary. In today's world, money has become the centre of society. It is also important for
maintaining good social relationships and balance in life. Both family needs and personal needs are
fulfilled with money. For this, we must learn how to save money and where and how to spend it wisely.

In today's fast-paced consumer-driven world, where advertisements constantly tempt us with the
latest gadgets, trendy clothes, and lifestyle upgrades, managing personal finances has become more
challenging than ever. At the heart of financial literacy lies a fundamental concept: understanding the
difference between Needs and Wants. This distinction forms the foundation of smart spending habits
and responsible money management. In our daily life, we all need money to buy things. But do we
really need everything we want to buy? This is where understanding Needs and Wants becomes very
important. It is the first and most important step towards Smart Spending Habits.

To bring happiness and peace in our daily life, saving money is very important. That is why we must
learn where to spend money and where to save it.

For this, we should first understand the difference between Needs and Wants.

Needs are the things we must have for daily life, safety in the future, health, and education. These are
important things. Needs are those things that are necessary for us to live and stay healthy. For
example:

• Food

• Water

• Clothes

• House

• School books and education

• Medicines

These are must-have things. We cannot live without them.

• Wants are unnecessary things that we can live without. For example, we can exercise at home
instead of going to the gym, eat at home instead of going to a restaurant, and we don’t need
to buy new clothes if the old ones are still good.

We should save money by avoiding unnecessary expenses. A person can become rich or poor by their
own choices and wishes. Therefore, we must think very seriously about saving money. Wants are those
things that we like or desire, but we can live without them. For example:

• Toys

• Video games
• Chocolates and ice creams

• Fancy clothes

• Latest mobile phones

• Eating in restaurants every day

Difference Between Essential and Non-Essential Expenses

Essential Expenses (Needs): These are necessary costs required for basic survival, health, and day-to-
day living. They are usually fixed or semi-fixed and hard to avoid without affecting your well-being.

Non-Essential Expenses (Wants): These are optional or discretionary costs that improve lifestyle or
provide enjoyment but are not required for survival. They can often be reduced or eliminated to save
money.

Smart Spending Choices

Smart spending choices are a secret to living a happy and simple life. Even if we have family and good
relationships, money is still very important. It makes our life easier and more comfortable. That is why
we must learn to spend our money in the right way. Unnecessary spending can lead us to poverty. In
times of emergency, we need money. Therefore, it is wise to spend our money carefully. To do this, we
should make a list of things that are necessary and things that are unnecessary. We should not spend
too much on unnecessary things. We must save money for our future and for any health or other
emergencies. Smart spending means we should first buy all our Needs and only then think about
Wants. We should not waste money on wants before completing our needs. This project on "Needs vs
Wants - Smart Spending Habits" will help us learn how to make wise choices while spending money.
We will understand how to control our wishes, make a simple budget, and save money for the future.
Learning this topic is very useful because good money habits started at a young age will help us become
responsible and happy in the future. Remember: “Spend money on Needs first, then on Wants.” This
is the secret of smart spending!

Smart spending is the practice of making intentional, value-driven decisions with your money —
focusing on long-term benefits, needs over wants, and maximum value for every rupee spent. “Smart
Spending is using money carefully and thoughtfully for things that are useful and helpful for our future.

Nowadays, life is becoming very difficult and expensive. Our daily expenses are increasing a lot. We
are developing new desires and wants in our lifestyle. We have started liking luxury life. We have
created a luxury culture in our society. Because of our changing lifestyle, e-commerce (online
shopping) is also growing rapidly. It gives us convenience but also makes us spend more money every
day. That is why Smart Spending Choices have become very important for us. We must change our old
thinking that “we should spend all the money we earn today.” If we do not change this habit, our future

5 ways to avoid unnecessary spending

There are many ways to reduce unnecessary spending and bring control in our expenses. Here are
some important ways:
1. Control Your Desires

To control unnecessary spending, first of all, we must control our desires. Humans are full of desires,
but we do not need to fulfill all of them. If we do not control our wishes, our unnecessary spending
keeps increasing. Controlling desires does not mean we should stop buying necessary things. It means
we should not buy expensive things when a cheaper one can do the same job. For example, a Vivo
phone can do all the work, so we don’t always need to buy an Apple phone. We must keep our needs
within limits. We ourselves create many of our needs. Therefore, having control and self-discipline over
our needs is one of the most important ways to reduce unnecessary spending.

2. Make a Budget

Before spending money, we should make a proper plan. We must think about what we are going to
spend on and how much we will spend. If we spend money according to a plan, we can easily control
unnecessary expenses. We should first decide which things are really needed at home and which are
not. We should only spend on necessary items. For example, if one kilogram of dal is enough for one
week, we should not buy three kilograms and waste money. We should roughly calculate how much
food is needed for how many days. We should make a plan for all types of expenses such as:

• Food budget

• Education and stationery expenses

• Medicine and health expenses

• Transportation expenses

This kind of planning helps us reduce unnecessary spending and allows us to save more money for the
future.

3. Saving

There is no guarantee in human life. Prices are rising day by day. Therefore, we should first focus on
saving money. After making a proper plan for household expenses, we should save the money that is
left every month. There are many ways to save money, but we must first become conscious and control
our unnecessary desires. Saving does not mean we have to become stingy. We should spend on our
needs in a balanced way and save the remaining money. We should not ignore all our wishes just for
saving. We should also enjoy life, but according to our financial condition. After fulfilling our basic
needs and responsibilities, we must focus on saving for the future.

4. Avoid Showing Off

In this modern age, many people spend money to show off. They often spend more than what they
earn. To show their status and prestige in society, they live a fake and luxurious lifestyle. People waste
money on unnecessary things just for show-off. For example, everyone celebrates their child’s birthday,
but some spend lakhs of rupees on a single day’s party. Even normal families spend thousands of
rupees on one birthday celebration. All this is just for show. We should learn to live a simple and
ordinary life. This helps us avoid unnecessary spending. If we have enough money and some savings
left after daily expenses, then we can buy good clothes, food, or other things according to our budget.
But spending money just to show off to others and prove that we are rich or important is foolish.
Therefore, we should avoid this show-off lifestyle.

5. Compare Prices and buy only what is useful

To control unnecessary spending, we should compare the prices of things we need in daily life. We
must check where we can get the items within our budget. Instead of buying expensive things online
just because it is easy, we should prefer offline shopping if we can get the same quality at a cheaper
price in the market. Going to big malls to buy things, eating ice cream, or buying books can also
increase unnecessary expenses. If we can get the same items, ice cream, or books at a reasonable price
outside, we should buy from there. To control unnecessary spending, we should only buy things that
are really necessary. If not having something does not affect us, then we don’t need to buy it.
Therefore, to reduce unnecessary spending, we should compare prices and buy only the things we
truly need.
