Abstract
The study is entitled: Impact of Teaching Materials on the Teaching and Learning
Process (TLP) of Reading and Writing in the Portuguese Language: A Case Study of
7th Grade Students at Malema-2 Basic School, Monapo District, Nampula Province
(2025–2026). The general objective is to understand the impacts underlying the limited
use of teaching materials in students’ learning of reading and writing, specifically:
support texts, dictionaries, school textbooks, mobile phones, computers, and the
Internet. This is achieved through identifying the main problems related to reading and
writing learning; describing the problems associated with teaching materials for reading
and writing in the selected school; and proposing effective strategies to generate a
positive impact on students.
Thus, the following research questions are raised: (i) Which teaching materials are most
effective in the development of reading and writing? (ii) How do support texts, school
textbooks, and students’ exercise books impact these skills? (iii) What challenges are
faced in their use?
The field research findings reveal that the exercise notebook is the only support material
for reading and writing that students have access to and use frequently. Other resources
are difficult to access, and even when available, their use to support reading and writing
remains insignificant. At the school, there is a lack of resources, with no library, school
textbooks, or photocopying machines. Teachers also do not encourage the use of such
materials during reading and writing lessons, although all participants (teachers and
students) recognize and acknowledge the effectiveness and relevance of teaching
materials used in the classroom.
Therefore, the study points to a systemic challenge in improving students’ learning in
schools, which requires coordinated actions at different institutional levels of
government, the Ministry of Education, and grassroots educational stakeholders, with a
primary focus on the teaching methodologies applied by teachers.
