B. Lesson/s Presentation

Before we start out topic, let us try to reflect on the essential questions below.
Essential Questions:
 Why should one eat healthy?
 What make one’s diet balanced?
 Are you nutritionally fit to live?

Good nutrition provides the body with all the nutrients it needs. Good nutrition begins
with the first dietary guideline. This allows us to eat a variety of foods.
There are two dietary guidelines that we can follow.
1. My Plate- represents four food groups and the certain nutritional benefits they
provide. It is made of four sections represented by four colors; orange (grains),
green (vegetables), violet (protein), read (fruits), plus a side order in blue (dairy).
2. My Pyramid- is a visual representation of how different foods and drinks
contribute towards a healthy balanced diet organized in a pyramid. Urges
consumers to select a diet of basic food at the appropriate calorie level and
encourages people to engage in daily physical activity.
To further understand how and why we should balance our meal, read the details and
information found in your book on pages 400-401.

If there’s an imbalance or improper organization between the foods that we eat

and the nutrients we should gain, nutritional problems might take place. One of the
major problems that our country is facing up until now is the growing cases of
Malnutrition. The malnutrition problem of about 28 million Filipinos in the country is
aggravated by the present economic situation. It is caused by the following major
factors-health, physical, social, and economic. The poverty condition of the majority of
the Filipinos cannot afford them to buy food to meet the nutritional requirements and to
provide their needs. The poor condition of the people contributed to the rising incidence
of infectious diseases such as diarrhea and respiratory diseases. The supply of food,
how it is distributed and consumed by the population have an impact on nutritional
status. Reports indicate that many Filipinos continue to become malnourished due to
poor diet and inadequate intake of nutrients. Children are affected not only for the lack
of food, but are also placed at risk by poor feeding and care practices.

What are the characteristics, signs and symptoms of Malnutrition?

2
Malnutrition- is a condition that results from nutrient deficiency or overconsumption.
There are two (2) types of Malnutrition

 Undernutrition: This type of malnutrition results from not getting enough protein,
calories or micronutrients. It leads to low weight-for-height (wasting), height-for-
age (stunting) and weight-for-age (underweight).

 Overnutrition: Overconsumption of certain nutrients, such as protein, calories or

fat, can also lead to malnutrition. This usually results in overweight or obesity.

Here are the characteristics, signs, and symptoms of Malnutrition and Micronutrient
deficiency.

 Weight loss
 Loss of fat and muscle mass
 Hollow cheeks and sunken eyes
 A swollen stomach
 Dry hair and skin
 Delayed wound healing
 Fatigue
 Difficulty concentrating
 Irritability
 Depression and anxiety
Symptoms of Undernutrition include weight loss, fatigue, irritability and micronutrient
deficiencies. Overnutrition can result in overweight, obesity and a lower intake of certain
vitamins and minerals.
In order to address the problem of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency, we must
follow the Nutritional Guidelines made by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute
(FNRI). Read the information about this in your book on pages 407-410)

Process Questions:
 Do you follow some of the nutritional guidelines?
 After learning this topic, how important are these Nutritional Guidelines for you?
Explain your answer.
For additional information to properly address the cases of malnutrition, we also have to
consider and be informed of the different Essential Vitamins that our body needs, take
note and familiarize yourself in each of the nutrients.

Let’s Try: (Formattive Assessment)
Activity 1:
Answer the following questions below and write your answers on your answer sheet

1. Why do we need to balance our meal?

2. Why do we need to eat a variety of foods?

C. Comparison/Abstraction
 Compare and contrast the similarity and difference between the two types
of Malnutrition; Undernutrition and Overnutrition.
 Compare and contrast the My Pyramid and My Plate model, which one do
you find more practical and convenient as a guide? Why do you say so?

D. Value Integration
 As we all know, our country has increasing cases of malnutrition, how will
you show your concern especially to those children who are currently
suffering from malnutrition?

E. Enrichment: (To be answered during synchronous class)
