Preface

This book covers all solved university questions of Mathematics.

In this book, the contents are presented in a comprehensive and

simple pattern. This is a sincere effort to help the students to
understand the topics.

We express our sincere gratitude to Mrs. A. K. Vidhya

Saraswathi and Mrs. K. A. Vanitha Kumari for their diligent and
dedicated efforts in helping us through out.

Suggestions for improvement of this book are welcome.

ratios of a line?
Solution: (i) Direction cosines If a directed line in space
makes angles α, β, γ with the positive direction of the coordinate
axes then cos α, cos β, cos γ are called the direction cosines of the
line. (ii) Direction ratios of a line If the direction cosines of a
line l, m, n are proportional to three real numbers a, b, c (or
vice-versa) with the same. constant of proportionality then a, b, c
are called the direction ratios (drs) of the line.

Find the equation of the sphere passing through the point

P(1, 1, −3) and which touches the plane x − 2y − 2z = 7 at
Q(3, −1, −1). (8)
Solution:
(1, 1, −3)
Given x − 2y − 2z = 7 (1) P
The drs of (1) are 1, −2, −2.
C
Let C be the centre CQ ⊥ (1)
CQ passes through Q(3, −1, −1)
and has direction ratios
Q(3 − 1 − 1)
1, −2, −2. x − 2y − 2z − 7 = 0
x−3 y+1 z+1
∴ Equation of CQ are = =
1 −2 −2
x−3 y+1 z+1
= = = r(say)
1 −2 −2
⇒ x = r + 3, y = −2r − 1, z = −2r − 1
i.e., C are (r + 3, −2r − 1, −2r − 1). h i
But CP = CQ ∵ CP, CQ are radius
CP2 = CQ2
(r + 3 − 1)2 + (−2r − 1 − 1)2 + (−2r − 1 + 3)2 = (r + 3 − 3)2
+ (−2r − 1 + 1)2
+ (−2r − 1 + 1)2
(r + 2)2 + (−2r − 2)2 + (−2r − 2)2 = (r)2 + 4r2 + 4r2

r2 + 4r + 4 + 4r2 + 8r + 4 + 4r2 − 8r + 4 = 9r2
4r + 12 = 0
4r = −12
r = −3
∴ Centre = C = (0, 5, 5) and
p
Radius = CP = (0 − 1)2 + (5 − 1)2 + (5 + 3)2

Solution: Given f (x, y) = x3 + 3xy2 − 15x2 − 15y2 + 72x
f x = 3x2 + 3y2 − 30x + 72
fy = 6xy − 30y
A = f xx = 6x − 30
B = f xy = 6y
C = fyy = 6x − 30
To find the stationary points
f x = 0 ⇒ 3x2 + 3y2 − 30x + 72 = 0 (1)
fy = 0 ⇒ 6xy − 30y = 0
MA 6153 - MATHEMATICS 17

⇒ 6x − 30 = 0 (or) y = 0
⇒ 6x − 30 = 0 ⇒ x = 5
Put y = 0 in (1), we get
3x2 − 30x + 72 = 0
x2 − 10x + 24 = 0
(x − 6)(x − 4) = 0
x = 6, 4
Put x = 5 in (1), we get
75 + 3y2 − 150 + 72 = 0
3y2 − 3 = 0
y2 = 1
y = ±1
Thus the stationary points are given by (6, 0), (4, 0), (5, 1),

AC − B2 36 > 0 36 > 0 −36 < 0 −36 < 0
Conclusion Min. Pt. Max. Pt. Saddle Pt. Saddle Pt.
Thus (6, 0) is a minimum point.
∴ Minimum value f (x, y) at (6, 0) is
f (x, y) = f (6, 0) = 63 + 0 − (15) (6)2 − 0 + (72)(6)
= 216 − 540 + 432

Thus (4, 0) is a maximum point.

Hence Proved.

2. State De Moivre’s theorem.

Solution : De Moivre’s Theorem states that for any ream number
‘x’ and integer ‘n’ it holds that where ‘i’ is the imaginary unit.
* [cos θ + i sin θ]n = cos nθ + i sin nθ, where n is an integer.
* One of the values of [cos θ + i sin θ]n is cos nθ + i sin nθ, where n is
a fraction.
Note:[cos θ + i sin θ]−n = cos nθ − i sin nθ.

3. Find the angle θ between the planes 2x − y + z = 6 and x − y − 2z = 3.

Solution : The given planes are

The dr’s normal to the plane (1) are 2, −1, 1

4. Show that the plane 2x − 2y + z + 12 = 0 touches the sphere x2 + y2 +

z2 − 2x − 4y + 2z − 3 = 0.
Solution : Sphere : x2 + y2 + z2 − 2x − 4y + 2z − 3 = 0 (1)
Plane : 2x − 2y + z + 12 = 0 (2)

Centre of (1) is (1, 2, −1) and

√ (1)

Lenth of the ⊥r from (1, 2, −1) on

√ =
4+4+1 3
(2) P(x, y, z)
= 3(radius of th sphere)
2x − 2y + z + 12 = 0
∴ The plane (2) taouches the sphere (1).
Let P(x, y, z) be the point of contact. The CP is normal to the plane
(2).
∴ Dr’s of CP are (2, −2, 1).
Also CP passes through C(1, 2, −1).
Hence the equations of CP are
x−1 y−2 z+1
= = = r(say)
2 −2 1
Any point on this line may be taken as
(2r + 1, −2r + 2, r − 1) (3)
If this point lies on (2), it will be the point of contact.
This point lies on plane (2), if
2(2r + 1) − 2(−2r + 2) + (r − 1) + 12 = 0
32 Anna University Question Papers

4r + 24r − 4 + r − 1 + 12 = 0
9r + 9 = 0

rate of rupees 200 per m2 . (8)
Solution: Let length and breadth of ABCD be 30m and
20m and there is a path 8m wide along its breadth and 5m
wide along its length. So let the outer rectangle formed be
PQRS .
So length and breadth of PQRS will be 46m(30 + 8 + 8) and
30m(20 + 5 + 5).
Now, we want to find the area between the rectangles PQRS
and ABCD.
i.e., area of the shaded path,
Shaded path = PQRS − ABCD
= (46 × 30) − (20 × 30)
= 1380 − 600
= 780m2
Given cementing of 1m2 = Rs.200
∴ 780m2 = 780 × 200
= 156000 rupees
