Q A soil specimen has a water content of 10% & a wet unit weight of 20 kN/ m3. If the specimen
gravity of solids is 2.70. Determine the dry unit weight , void ratio, & the degree of saturation .

Q A moist soil sample weight 3.52 N. After drying is an oven its weight is reduced to 2.9 N. The
specific gravity and mass specific gravity are respectively 2.65 & 1.85. Determine the water content,
void ratio, porosity & degree of saturation. Take γw= 10 kN/m3
Q A sample of clay has the liquid limit & shrinkage limit of respectively 60% & 25%. If the sample
has a volume of 10ml at the liquid limit and a volume of 6.40ml at the shrinkage limit. Determine the
specific gravity of solids?

Q. A mould of volume 1000 ml was used to determine relative density. When the sand was
dynamically compacted in the mould, its mass was 2.10 kg, whereas when the sand was poured in
loosely, its mass was 1.635 kg. If the in-situ density of the soil was 1.50 g/ml, calculate the relative
density. G=2.70. Assume that sand is saturated.

rapidly so as to completely remould the soil. The remoulded soil was sheared at a torque of 20 N-m.
Calculate the cohesion of the clay in the natural and remoulded state and also the value of the
sensitivity.

N and the axial deformation of the sample at failure was 13 mm. Determine the Unconfined
compressive strength and the undrained shear strength of the clay.
