MYP 1 Success Criterion The Design Cycle

Instructions (read carefully) Lesson by Lesson Tasks

Use time allocated for criterion D to fully test check and evaluate your Lesson 1
product.
● Self and peer feedback

Each scheduled lesson (4 in total), you should follow the instructions Lesson 2
to complete each task required for criterion D. The rubric/success
criteria is on the previous slide for reference and task-specific ● Evaluation against the specification
instructions are on each slide, with linked examples where
Lesson 3
appropriate. ● Test and checks

Emphasise:
- Evaluation Lesson 4
● Evaluation and user impact.
- Test and check the product function
- Suggestion for further Improvement and development.

Key Word Meaning

Self and peer Self-evaluation: Self-evaluation involves

Evaluation individuals assessing their own performance,
Peer evaluation is a process in which individuals
within a group or team assess the performance,
contributions, or behaviors of their peers.

Specification
Evaluation against specification refers to the
process of assessing a product, service, or
project to determine whether it meets the
predefined specifications or requirements.

Use impact. User impact refers to the effects, consequences,

or outcomes experienced by individuals or
groups who interact with a product, service, or

Does it look attractive and yes kinda I think the design looks neat

Is it economical to produce? yes I think so The materials are affordable

and low-cost.

Is it environmentally friendly maybe I think so I am not sure I mean If I did

could have used recycled
parts

Are there any potential no maybe The design is safe and

hazards or safety concerns? stable to use.

Are they appropriate for the yes Probably The materials are strong

Is it smooth, well-finished, yes yes The product is mostly

and free from defects? smooth and tidy.

Is the design feasible for yes yes The design is simple and
production? easy to make.

Dii-iii: Evaluation Against Specification Lesson 3 Communication ATL

Copy over your specification from criterion B and then explain how you have or have not met each criteria

Specification Explain: How I have / have not achieved this

Aesthetics The model must have a neat and professional I achieved this specification because the beams, plates, sprockets,
appearance with aligned parts and a consistent chains, and turbine are arranged neatly. The structure looks organized
design. and resembles a real engineering model.

Customer The model must help middle-school students I achieved this specification because the moving sprockets, chains,
understand energy transfer clearly. and turbine allow users to easily observe how energy is transferred
through the system.

Environment The model should use reusable materials where I partially achieved this specification because all VEX EXP parts can be
possible. reused in future projects. However, the materials are mainly plastic and
metal rather than recycled materials.

Size The model must be compact enough to fit on a I achieved this specification because the model fits comfortably on a
classroom desk and be easy to transport. desk and can be moved easily without taking up too much space.

Safety The model must have no sharp edges and remain I achieved this specification because the VEX parts have smooth
stable during operation. edges and the structure stays stable when the system is operated.

Function The model must demonstrate energy transfer by using I achieved this specification because rotating the input sprocket
sprockets, chains, axles, and a turbine. transfers motion through the chains and sprockets, causing the turbine
to spin. This successfully demonstrates energy transfer.

Material (VEX The model must be made using durable VEX EXP I achieved this specification by using VEX EXP parts including 2×18
EXP Parts) components. beams, 2×10 beams, 2×4 beams, 3×3 plates, sprockets, chain links,
axles, corner connectors, shaft collars, washers, and a turbine. These
materials remained strong throughout testing.

Manufacturing The model must be assembled accurately with I achieved this specification because the beams, axles, sprockets, and
properly aligned components. chains were assembled correctly. The parts remained aligned, allowing
the system to operate smoothly without major issues.
Diii & iv: Evaluation and User Impact Lesson 4

What has been successful in your work and why? What impact will your product make on the
The most successful part of my work was creating a working user’s life/how will it solve the problem?
energy transfer system using VEX EXP parts. The sprockets, My product helps students understand how energy
chains, axles, and turbine worked together to transfer motion transfer works in mechanical systems. By observing
successfully. The model was also stable and durable, allowing it to the movement of the sprockets, chains, and turbine,
function without parts falling apart during testing. users can see how motion and energy are
transferred from one part to another. This makes
What would you change and why? learning about energy systems more interactive and
.If I could improve the model, I would make it larger and add more easier to understand
stages to the energy transfer system. This would make the
movement easier to observe and allow the model to demonstrate
more complex engineering concepts. I would also improve the
appearance by making the structure more symmetrical.

What did you find difficult and why?

The most difficult part was aligning the sprockets, chains, and
axles correctly. If the parts were not aligned properly, the chain
could slip or the system would not rotate smoothly. This required
careful adjustments during assembly and testing.

How could your product have been made more

environmentally friendly?
My product could have been made more environmentally friendly
by using recycled materials where possible and reducing the
number of parts used. Although the VEX EXP parts are reusable,
using recycled or sustainably sourced materials for some
components would further reduce environmental impact.
