Introduction
A hydraulic lift is a device used to lift
heavy loads with the help of fluid
pressure. It works on Pascal's Law,
which states that pressure applied to
a confined fluid is transmitted
equally and undiminished in all
directions. Hydraulic lifts are widely
used in automobile service stations,
factories, elevators, cranes, and
heavy machinery. The project
demonstrates how a small force can
be used to lift a larger load through
the transmission of pressure in a
liquid.
Observation
1. To study the application of Pascal's
Law.
2. To construct a working model of a
hydraulic lift.
3. To understand the transmission of
pressure in liquids.
4. To observe force multiplication
using hydraulic systems.
Theory
Pascal's Law
Pascal's Law states:
"Pressure applied to an enclosed liquid is transmitted equally and undiminished in all
directions throughout the liquid."
Mathematically,
1. Pressure Definition
Pressure (P) is defined as the force (F) exerted perpendicular to a surface area (A):
\(P = \frac{F}{A}\)
2. Applying Pascal's Law
Let a small force F₁ be applied to the smaller piston of area A₁. The pressure created
in the fluid is:
\(P_{1} = \frac{F_{1}}{A_{1}}\)According to Pascal's Law, this pressure is transmitted
uniformly throughout the fluid to the larger piston of area A₂. So, the pressure on the
larger piston is:
\(P_{2} = \frac{F_{2}}{A_{2}}\)Since P₁ = P₂, we get the core mathematical equation:
\(\frac{F_{1}}{A_{1}} = \frac{F_{2}}{A_{2}}\)
3. Calculating the Output Force (F₂)
By rearranging the formula, you can calculate the upward force exerted by the large
piston:
\(F_{2} = F_{1} \times \left(\frac{A_{2}}{A_{1}}\right)\)
Because the area of the second piston is much larger than the first (i.e., \(A_{2} \gt\gt
A_{1}\)), the output force F₂ becomes proportionally larger, enabling you to lift heavy
payloads.
Principle of
Hydraulic Lift
A hydraulic lift consists of two pistons of different
cross-sectional areas connected by a tube filled with
liquid (usually water or oil).
When force is applied to the smaller piston:
1. Pressure is created in the liquid.
2. The pressure is transmitted equally through the
liquid.
3. The larger piston experiences the same pressure.
4. Due to its larger area, it produces a greater
lifting force and raises the load.
Materials Required
Four plastic syringes
Flexible plastic tube
Coloured water
Cardboard sheet
Glue gun/Fevicol
Cutter and scissors
Small platform for lifting load
Toy
Procedure
1. Take two syringes
2. Connect them using a plastic tube.
3. Fill both syringes and the tube completely with colored water.
4. Ensure that no air bubbles remain inside the system.
5. Fix the two syringes vertically on a cardboard base.
6. Attach a cardboard platform on the piston of the two syringes.
7. Fix the smaller syringe at a convenient position for operation.
8. Place a small load on the platform.
9. Push the other two syringes gently.
10. Observe the upward movement of the larger piston and the
load.
Working
When the plunger of the lower syringes is pressed,
pressure is exerted on the liquid inside it. According to
Pascal's Law, this pressure is transmitted equally through
the liquid to the vertical [Link] it produces a
larger force and lifts the load placed on it.
Observation
Small force applied on lower syringes Pressure
generated pressure transmitted through liquid
Equal in all directions vertical syringes receives
pressure Load moves upward increased area of
larger piston Greater lifting force.
Applications of Hydraulic Lift
1. Car service stations
2. Hydraulic jacks
3. Elevators and lifts
4. Construction machinery
5. Hydraulic brakes
6. Aircraft control systems
7. Industrial lifting equipment
Advantages
● Lifts heavy loads with less effort.
● Simple and efficient mechanism.
● Smooth operation.
● Widely used in industries.
Limitations
● Leakage of fluid can reduce efficiency.
● Regular maintenance is required.
● Air bubbles affect performance.
● Not suitable if hydraulic fluid is contaminated.
Conclusion
The hydraulic lift model successfully
demonstrates Pascal's Law. The experiment
shows that pressure applied to a confined liquid
is transmitted equally throughout the fluid. As
a result, a small force applied on a smaller
piston can generate a much larger force on a
larger piston, making it possible to lift heavy
loads with ease. Thus, hydraulic systems
provide an excellent example of the practical
application of fluid mechanics in everyday life.
