B: Yes, we went there at the weekend. It's amazing, and it's so big!
A: I know. How long did you spend there?
B: All day! We were tired at the end.
C: Yeah, really tired!
A: I'm sure.
B: We also went to the Hagia Sophia.
A: Did you? I've never been in there.
B: But you live here!
A: I know, but sometimes you don't think about visiting places when they're near.
B: That's true. We live in London and I've never been to Buckingham Palace.
A: So, what are you doing later?
C: We'd like to go out for dinner somewhere, but we're not sure where.
A: Well, have you tried the fish here?
B: No, we haven't.
A: Oh, you should! It's very good - very fresh. There's a great place quite near
here. I can take you there, if you want.

unknown woman who saved an old man's life. Bao Lam was out walking along a
river near his home when he fell into the water. Bao can't swim, but he was very
lucky...
S: A woman with a dog saw Mr Lam fall and she jumped in the river to save him.
After she pulled him out, she called an ambulance and it took him to hospital
before Mr Lam got her name. Mr Lam is now looking for the woman to give her a
large gift of money to say thank you.

S: So, we have our first caller. Mo, tell us your story.
C: Yeah. Last week, I was flying home from Morocco and there was a really bad
storm during the flight. I was so afraid.
S: Oh, I hate flying in bad weather.
C: Yeah, I felt really bad, but the lady next to me was so kind and funny. She
talked to me and helped me stay calm. So I hope she's listening, and I'd like to
say thanks.
A: Thanks, Mo. So Jess. You also have a special person who helped you.
J: Yes. When I was younger my life was very difficult. I was often upset and
angry, and I had a lot of problems at school. Anyway, the school had this lovely
woman who talked to kids with problems. I went to see her every week for almost
a year. I talked to her about everything. She helped me find a better way to live
and not get angry and fight. I would like to tell her I'm at university now and that
she changed my life.
A: Fantastic. And what's this woman called?
J: Miss Latif.
A: So Miss Latif - if you're listening, good job!

N: Yes. Last year I was on the way home from work. It was late and I was really
tired and hungry, so I went into a shop to buy something for dinner. I was waiting
to pay and I heard the shop assistant say that the card machine wasn't working.
A: Oh no you didn't have cash?
N: No, and I guess I said something to myself, because the guy in front of me
turned and said, 'Don't worry. I'll pay,"
A: Wow. That was kind.
N: Yeah. Anyway, he left very quickly, and I just want to thank him again.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to our bus tour of Madrid. My name is Miguel and I'm
your guide today. On the tour, we'll see some of Madrid's most famous places
and I'll tell you about the history of this great city. If you have any questions on
the way, please ask me. Our tour today will take you about 90 minutes -
depending on traffic. We’ll sometimes stop and get off the bus for photos. OK…

Conversation 1
M:So today we're starting the tour outside the Prado Museum. It's Spain's most
important museum. The collection has 7,600 paintings and includes our greatest
artists. The main building was designed in 1785 to be a science museum, but
later the new king and queen decided to use it for art instead. They opened the
art museum in 1819. Sorry, you have a question?
A: Yes. How much does it cost to go in?
M: Fifteen euros, but there are discounts for students and young people.
A: Oh I think I'm too old!
M: Don't worry. Entrance is also free after 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. It closes at 8
so you won't have time to see all the paintings, but I think you can see enough.

B: Yes-fantastic! I loved it. Fifteen euros is cheap.

M:OK... We're now driving through an area called Barrio de Salamanca. There
are 21 areas in Madrid and this is one of the richest. A flat here often costs over a
million euros. We're going to stop here a moment. Over there is Madrid's biggest
indoor stadium. They hold big concerts there as well as basketball and handball
matches. There's been... Yes?
B: What basketball team plays here?
M: It's the home of two teams - Real Madrid and my team Estudiantes. They've
also had the World Cup of Basketball here.
B: Did Spain win?
M: Not that year unfortunately, but Spain has won it twice!... Anyway, there have
been three stadiums here in the last 150 years. The first was a bullring. Then the
second was an indoor arena like this one, but in 2001 there was a big fire that
destroyed that stadium. This one opened in 2005.

M: OK, this is the last stop before we return to the Prado Museum. We're going to
get off and enter the Plaza Mayor or main square. It's perhaps the loveliest
square in Madrid. OK, follow me... the building on the north side is the oldest - it's
from the 16th century and is called Casa de la Panadería do you know what a
panadería is?
C: It looks like a hotel.
M: Pan means bread.
C: A bakery?
M: Yes ... it was a bread shop!
C: What? The whole building? That's a lot of bread!
M: Well, no. Just the ground floor was the bakery.

Lesson 12C, Exercises 6 & 7
I heard a story on the news this morning about the happiest countries in the
world. What surprised me about the United Nations research is that my
husband's country - Finland - came first and has done for six years now. It's
funny because the Finns' neighbours in Norway and Sweden think of them as
quiet and a bit boring!
One interesting thing about the research is that it shows money isn't the only
thing you need for a happy life. For example, Singapore is one of the richest
countries in the world, but is 25th on the list behind Costa Rica, which isn't even
one of the 50 richest countries.
In one of his books, Professor Daniel Kahneman found this was also true not just
for countries, but for people. He asked some women in Texas, US, to write down
how they felt at different times in their day and most of them were happy most of
the time - those with a lot of money and those with less! The thing that made
them happiest was spending time with friends and family. They enjoyed this more
than looking after their children! They hated travelling to and from work.
I wanted to test this idea, so I decided to start recording what I do at different
times of the day and then listening later to see how I feel when I'm doing different
things. Here's what I did yesterday.
Lesson 12C, Exercises 9 & 10
1. I got the bus to work. I was lucky because I got a seat. I sat and read my book.
It was quite a nice journey
2. When I got to work, we had a meeting. The boss was quite angry. She shouted
a bit and told us we need to work harder It was really horrible.
3. After the meeting finished, I sat and thought about everything I had to do. I got
a headache. I sent a few emails and tried not to think about anything else.
4. I had lunch with my aunt. She lives near my office. She always makes me
smile. I felt better after seeing her.
5. After lunch, I met some customers. It was a successful afternoon. I sold a few
things, and it's always nice to meet people.
6. Back in the office, I had to answer about 30 emails. It was slow and not very
interesting.
7. After work, I had to wait for the bus for half an hour and then when it carne, it
was full, so I couldn't sit and read
8. When I got home, I went for a run with my friend, Viv. We're going to go on
holiday together, so we talked about that. It was a lovely warm evening.
9. After dinner, I watched the news on TV. I wanted to watch a film as well, but I
fell asleep on the sofa.

C: Have you seen the musical Hamilton yet?
D: Yes, I have. I saw it last week, actually.
C: Oh really? We went to see it last night. What did you think of it?
D: It was OK. Nothing special. I enjoyed some scenes, but I just didn't think the
writing was very good.
C: No? Oh, I thought the whole thing was brilliant - one of the best things I've
seen in a long time.
D: Yeah? OK
C: It had such energy. The dancing and the music were great-and I loved the way
they used the stage. It was very funny too. I couldn't stop laughing!
D: What about the way it ended? I thought it was too much!
C: Not for me! I started crying it was so sad!
D: Really? Oh well. I guess we just like different kinds of things, then.
Lesson 14C, Exercises 2 & 3
1. Tomorrow, people across the country will choose a new government - and at
the moment, it's very hard to say what the result will be. The two main parties
both say they hope to win, but most people think that they will probably have to
work together and share power. We'll know the final results early on Monday
morning.
2. One of the largest companies in the country has said that it is going to cut
5,000 jobs. The company lost 385 million dollars last year and now plans to close
its two biggest factories in the north of the country.
3. Abroad, talks between the United Kingdom and the European Union are
continuing. The two sides still can't agree on how to do business together or on
how people can move between the different countries, but both say they still
hope the talks will end well.
4. Next, music and some news that has surprised many people The winner of
last year's TV Idol show-Myleene- is planning to get married to her boyfriend of
two months, who she met while they were both working on a new TV show.
5. And finally, the national Women's Team go into their important World Cup
match tonight without one of their star players, Williams, who hurt herself in the
gym yesterday. It's now possible that she won't play in the next two or three
games.
Lesson 14C, Exercise 5
a) This'll be terrible for the whole area. It'll be really bad because lots of people
will have to move to find work.
b) It won't last. I don't think they'll be together by the end of the year.
c) I don't think the situation will gbet worse. They both have too much to lose. I'm
sure they'll solve the problems they're having
d) This loss won't change anything. They'll still have a very strong team tonight.
e) It'll be better if there's no dear winner. It'll mean they all have to talk to each
other and solve problems together!

Lesson 15C, Exercises 6 & 7
1. Well, a phone-obviously. Then I nearly always wear headphones, because I
love listening to music. And I also wear a smart watch, so that's three almost
always with me. Then, if I'm going to university, I often take a laptop. And I have a
card to pay for things I guess that is a kind of technology. I mean I never pay in
cash for anything these days.
2. At work, we still use it a lot. They have tried to reduce how many people send,
but I recently had two weeks' holiday and when I got back to the office, I had 300
waiting for me in my inbox. But with friends and family, I usually just use an app
for messages. I have a younger brother and I've stopped sending him emails
because he doesn't check his account for days, or even weeks
3. The short answer is too much. I actually realized how much I looked at it when
I went camping with some friends a few weeks ago. There was no connection
where we were, and I immediately felt strange about not being able to check my
social media. But then, after a few days, we all realized we were talking more
and it felt good being without our phones. When I got back, I wanted to continue,
but it's actually really difficult. You can't change your behaviour easily.
[Link] is actually terrible because I work in a tech company and I know I
shouldn't open files when you don't know where they're from. Anyway, a friend
sent me a text with a file and the message 'this is great. I clicked on the link
without thinking and I immediately realized it was a mistake. The phone suddenly
started deleting all my messages and I couldn't do anything about it. So stupid!

F: No! Why's that?
E: I think she wanted kids, but he didn't and they argued about it a lot.
F: Oh, that's sad! How long were they together?
E: Not that long. Four years, I think
F: What a shame! They made such a lovely couple.
E: I know. I hope we can stay friends with them both.

G: Did I tell you that I had a date on Friday?
H: No. Who with?
G: A guy from my French class.
H: So what's he like?
G: He seems very nice. He's quite quiet, but he's funny.
H: Is he good-looking?
G: I think so, yeah. He has lovely eyes.
H: OK. So what did you do? Something romantic?
G: Not really, no. We had a drink together and then we met some of his friends
for karaoke.
Lesson 16C, Exercises 3 & 5
1. My wife and I spent two years looking for the right place to live. We weren't
looking very hard for the first year and a half, but then she got pregnant and we
had to find somewhere fast. We saw five houses every weekend for six months,
but didn't like any of them. One day, we were driving home from another
appointment when we saw it-the house of our dreams! And, amazingly, it was for
sale. We knocked at the door and the people that lived there let us look around. It
was everything we wanted! We offered the price they were asking for it and
moved in soon after that
2. When I was a kid, I always loved music and musical instruments For my
twelfth birthday, my uncle gave me a guitar and it was love at first sight. My uncle
was a really important person for me then. He was playing in a band at the time
and I went to see them one night. That had a big effect on me. After that, the
guitar became the centre of my world. I played it 24 hours a day, seven days a
week. Later, I studied music at university and now I have a job making guitars. All
because of that special day!
3. I play online games a lot and love thinking of new characters. You design
them, choose their names and the way they look and then make lives for them.
Last year, I was in a relationship, but things weren't going very well. We were
arguing all the time, so I started spending more and more time online. One night,
I was playing one of my favourite games when I met my future husband. He was
new to the game and looked lost, so I decided to help him. His name in the game
was Nyxon and with his cat ears, blue skin and big eyes, he looked great. It was
love at first sight. Nyxon soon asked my character to marry him and I said yes.
We were married online in July. It was very romantic He then asked me in the
real world and I agreed. We haven't actually met yet, but I know that he's the one
for me.
