Question 1.

[20 marks]
a) Define the pull-out torque of the motor. What happens if this torque is exceeded?
[8 marks]
b) A three phase, 60 Hz, 4 poles induction motor runs at a no-load speed of 1790 r/min and a
full load speed of 1720 r/min. Calculate the slip and electrical frequency of the rotor at no-
load and full-load conditions. What is the speed regulation of this motor?

Question 2. [30 marks]
a) If a 60 Hz synchronous motor is to be operated at 50 Hz, will the synchronous reactance
will change? If it is, by how much value? Explain.
[8 marks]
b) Use the rotor’s equivalent circuit in Figure 1 to show that an induction motor will have a
maximum starting torque when its rotor resistance (𝑅 ) is equal to its leakage reactance
(𝑋 ). Assume that all quantities are on a per-phase basis.

c) A three phase, 440 V, and Y-connected synchronous motor has a synchronous reactance of
1.5 Ω per phase. The filed current has been adjusted so that the torque angle 𝛿 is 28 when
the power supplied by the generator is 90kW.
i. What is the magnitude of the internal generated voltage 𝐸 in this machine?
ii. What are the magnitude and angle of the armature current in the machine? What is the
motor’s power factor?
iii. If the field current remains constant, what is the absolute maximum power this motor
could supply?

Question 3. [50 marks]
a) A 6-pole, 3phase, 60 Hz induction motor takes 48kW in power at 1140 rpm. The stator
copper loss is 1.4 kW, stator core loss is 1.6 kW, and rotor mechanical losses are 1kW.
Calculate the efficiency of motor.

b) An induction motor when driving a load takes 350kW at 0.707 power factor lagging. An
overexcited synchronous motor is connected in parallel with this induction motor, taking
150 kW in power. If the overall power factor (of the two motors combined) becomes 0.9
lagging, calculate the kVA rating of the synchronous motor.
[18 marks]
c) Determine the approximated parameters (𝑅 , 𝑋 , total resistance 𝑅 , total reactance 𝑋 ) of
the equivalent circuit of a 3-phase, wye-connected induction motor. Results of no-load and
blocked-rotor tests are described as follows.
No-load test: line-to-line voltage = 400V, input power = 1770W, input current = 18.5A,
friction and windage loss = 600W
Blocked-rotor test: line-to-line voltage = 45V, input power = 2700W, input current =
