Subatomic Particles of an Atom

Atoms are made up of tiny particles called subatomic particles. The three main subatomic particles are electrons,
protons, and neutrons.

Particle Symbol Charge Relative Mass Location

Electron e■ -1 1/1836 Outside nucleus
Proton p■ +1 1 Inside nucleus
Neutron n■ 0 1 Inside nucleus

Electron
Electrons are negatively charged particles that revolve around the nucleus in shells or energy levels.

Proton
Protons are positively charged particles present inside the nucleus. The number of protons decides the atomic
number of an element.

Neutron
Neutrons are neutral particles found in the nucleus. They help in stabilizing the nucleus.

Important Facts:
• Atomic number = Number of protons
• Mass number = Protons + Neutrons
• In a neutral atom, number of electrons = number of protons
