✔ slightly long but exam-focused
✔ no skipping

I’ll do it in PARTS so it stays easy to read.

📘 CHAPTER 7 – PART 1
Networking & Communication Basics

🟢 SLIDE 1: Networking and Communication

Trends

🔹 Convergence

 Convergence means different types of networks merging into one system.

 Earlier, there were two separate systems:
o Telephone network → used only for voice calls
o Computer network → used only for data (internet, files)

👉 Now both are combined into one digital network using Internet standards.

✔ Meaning: You can now call, chat, video call, and send data all using the internet.

🔹 Broadband

 Broadband means high-speed internet connection.

 It allows large amount of data to be transferred quickly.

👉 Example:
 Streaming YouTube
 Online gaming
 Video calls

✔ Most households now use broadband instead of slow dial-up.

🔹 Broadband Wireless

 Broadband wireless means internet without cables.

 Uses:
o Wi-Fi
o Mobile data (4G/5G)

👉 Voice + data both travel through wireless networks now.

✔ Meaning: Internet is no longer fixed to wires.

🟢 SLIDE 2: What is a Computer Network?

🔹 Definition

 A computer network is 2 or more connected computers that communicate with each

other.

👉 They share:

 Data
 Files
 Resources (like printers)

🔹 Main Components of Network

1. Client and Server Computers

 Client = user device (laptop, mobile)

 Server = powerful computer that provides services
👉 Example:

 You open Google → your phone is client, Google server sends data

2. Network Interface Card (NIC)

 NIC is a hardware chip inside devices.

 It allows device to connect to network.

👉 Without NIC → no internet connection possible.

3. Transmission Media (Connection Medium)

This is the path data travels through.

Wired media:

 Ethernet cable
 Fiber optic cable

✔ Fast and stable connection

Wireless media:

 Wi-Fi
 Radio waves

✔ Flexible but sometimes unstable

4. Network Operating System (NOS)

 Special software that manages network.

 Controls communication between computers.

👉 Example:
Windows Server

✔ It decides:

 Who can access network

 What data can be shared
5. Networking Devices
Router

 Connects different networks together

 Example: home internet router

Switch

 Connects devices inside same network

 Sends data only to correct device

Hub

 Basic device
 Sends data to all devices (less efficient)

6. Software Defined Networking (SDN)

 Network controlled by software instead of hardware manually.

👉 Meaning:
Instead of configuring each device, a central software controls everything.

✔ Makes network smarter and faster to manage.

🟢 SLIDE 3: SDN (Software Defined

Networking)

🔹 What is SDN?

 SDN is a modern networking system.

 It separates:
o Control (decision making)
o Data movement (traffic flow)

👉 Control is handled by software controller.

🔹 How SDN works

1. Controller decides best path for data

2. Sends instructions to switches
3. Switches forward data accordingly

✔ Meaning: Central brain controls whole network

🔹 Advantages

 Central control → easy management

 Flexible → easy to change network
 Scalable → can expand easily
 Faster configuration → quick setup

🔹 Disadvantages

 Single point failure → if controller breaks, system stops

 Security risk → centralized system can be attacked
 Needs new infrastructure → expensive setup

🟢 SLIDE 4: SDN vs Traditional Networking

🔹 Traditional Networking

 Each device decides its own rules

 Manual configuration required
 Hard to manage large networks

🔹 SDN Networking

 Central controller decides everything

 Easy software-based control
 Faster updates and changes
🔹 Key Differences Explained

 Control:
o Traditional → distributed
o SDN → centralized
 Configuration:
o Traditional → manual setup
o SDN → software-based
 Scalability:
o Traditional → limited growth
o SDN → easily expandable
 Cost:
o Traditional → expensive hardware
o SDN → cheaper hardware

🟢 SLIDE 5: Simple Computer Network

(Figure 7.1)

Explanation:

This diagram shows:

 PCs (clients) → used by users

 Switch → connects PCs
 Server → stores data and manages network
 Router → connects to internet

👉 Flow:
PC → Switch → Server → Router → Internet

✔ Meaning: All devices are connected through central system.

🟢 SLIDE 6: Networks in Large Companies

Large companies use complex networks.

🔹 LANs (Local Area Networks)

 Small internal networks in offices or departments

🔹 Corporate Network

 Connects all LANs together in company

🔹 Servers

 External access (extranet)
 Backend systems (databases, apps)

🔹 Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi)

 Allows employees to connect without wires

🔹 Videoconferencing

 Used for online meetings (Zoom, Teams)

🔹 Telephone + Mobile systems

 Integrated communication systems in company

🟢 SLIDE 7: Corporate Network

Infrastructure (Figure 7.2)
Explanation:

This shows full company communication system:

 Internet connects company to outside world

 Servers manage data and applications
 Employees use:
o PCs
o mobile phones
o Wi-Fi networks

✔ Meaning:
All communication flows through centralized systems + internet.

🟢 SLIDE 8: Client/Server Computing

🔹 What is it?

 Network model where:

o Client requests data
o Server provides data

🔹 Explanation:

 Clients = users (phones, laptops)

 Server = central system

🔹 How it works:

1. Client sends request

2. Server processes request
3. Server sends response
🔹 Importance:

 Replaced old mainframe systems

 Internet works on this model

✔ Example:
Google search = client sends query → Google server responds

🟢 SLIDE 9: Packet Switching

🔹 What is it?

 Data is broken into small pieces called packets.

🔹 How it works:

1. Message is split into packets

2. Packets travel different routes
3. Destination reassembles them

🔹 Advantage:

 Faster communication
 Efficient network usage
 No fixed path required

🔹 Old system comparison:

 Circuit switching = one fixed path (slow)

 Packet switching = multiple paths (fast)
🟢 SLIDE 10: TCP/IP Model

🔹 What is TCP/IP?

Rules for internet communication.

🔹 4 Layers:
1. Application Layer

 User services like:

o Web browsing
o Email

2. Transport Layer

 Ensures data delivery

 TCP = reliable
 UDP = fast

3. Internet Layer

 Finds best path for data (routing)

4. Network Access Layer

 Sends data physically (cables/Wi-Fi)

✔ Meaning: Every internet action uses these 4 layers.
