Misplaced Modifier

A misplaced modifier is a word or phrase that is placed too far from the word it
modifies, causing confusion or changing the meaning.

Formula:

Modifier + wrong position = unclear meaning

Example:

❌ She almost drove her kids to school every day.


✅ She drove her kids to school almost every day.
(This means she almost drove but didn't actually drive.)

(This means she drove them on most days.)

Another Example:

❌ The man was carrying a bag walking down the street.


✅ Walking down the street, the man was carrying a bag.
2. Dangling Modifier

A dangling modifier is a word or phrase that does not clearly modify any word in the
sentence. The person or thing it describes is missing.

Formula:

Modifier + no clear subject = dangling modifier


Example:

❌ Walking to school, the rain started.


✅ Walking to school, I noticed the rain started.
(It sounds as if the rain was walking.)

✅ As I was walking to school, the rain started.


Another Example:

❌ After reading the book, the movie seemed disappointing.


✅ After reading the book, I found the movie disappointing.
(The movie didn't read the book.)
